Rodesbeck Moffart
« on: Wednesday 19 December 07 21:09 GMT (UK) »

My ancestors are the Stoddarts ( or Stothart, or Stothert or Stodhart) and were tennant farmers on the Earl of Hopetouns estate in the parish of Johnstone Bridge. When I search on FamilySearch.org a lot of Stoddarts were christened at Rodesbeck, Moffat. Does anybody know of the word "Rodesbeck"?

Hi
This is a long shot, I have a Stothart in my tree and I was wondering if you have a Sarah Eliza Stothart born about 1806 in your family, she married George Bell in 1827 at Graitney, Dumfries, Scotland. Unfortunately I don’t know who her parents were.
Kind Regards Dryden.

I reckon this is Bodesbeck, but it is just a farm, there is no church. It is about 8 kilometres from Moffat on the Selkirk Road at NT 150095. It is practically world famous for the legend of the Brownie, published by James Hogg (The Ettrick Shepherd), a contemporary and friend of Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott.
