Walker's Land Duntocher?

Hi,
My g-grandfather Hugh Gillan was born in 1857 at Walker's Land, Main St, Duntocher.

I have read a couple of posts on here about 'X's Land' and wondered if anyone could tell me a bit more about this one?

Unfortunately all my research is via the internet as I'm stuck in Coventry, an my Glasgow geography is terrible!

hi there,just seen your post tonite, i live in hardgate about 500 yards  from duntocher! i have asked relatives about "walkers land" they all going to have a long hard think about it for you, hopefully i will get back to you soon with some answers.

Hi Elsie,

I have a Patrick Coyle and his wife Mary McLaughlin who lived at Walkers Land, Main Street in 1909.  I think it stands for the old farm name that the building they lived in was built upon - either that, or the original landlord of the property before the council took it over.

Duntocher seems to be full of these X Land named areas

As Debbie has said the term Walker's  Land etc generally referred to a stretch of housing built by a private landlord (occasionally it referred to the original farm owner but not often).

The housing was often densely packed tenement style in the main urban areas although in some places there was planning and a definite design to the whole structure when carried out over a wider area e.g. Anderston in Glasgow.
