I'm tracing my Gt Gt Grandmother: (My very first post  )
Catharine/Catherine Reid, all I know is: b 1829-1834? Scotland, possibly Dumbarton; she went to Tasmania (as 17 year old to be a Governess). I was told she was on a ship called "Lady Jane O'Loughlin" not able to track that down. 
First sign I have is her marriage recorded near Launceston in 1862 so unsure as to when she actually landed in Tasmania. She called herself Kate her name Catherine is spelt either way on her forms. She may have had a brother William who went to Tas too! Don't know anything about her family. Her daughter Kate (see below) returned to Glasgow, Lanark around 1895 with her spouse I located them (as below).
My grandmother (daughter of Mary Parkin^) said Kate No 1. came from Dumbarton. Very little was ever said of her. She ran a boarding house late 1800's with husband John Parkin in Ulverstone, Tasmania up to her death in 1914 aged 85.

** Kate - married George E Maude b1851 Halifax Yorks in Tas in 1890 had 2 children in Tas before they moved to UK. I have found them on his family farm at Bentham, York in 1901 census they then have 4 girls - Letitia Nicholl 9,(Tas); Mary Harriet 6(Tas; Gertrude 4, Kate 3 both born Bentham, Yorks.
It's very hard to track without all the necessary paperwork starting from Scotland may be my only option. Looks like the name was true as Kate above was in Glasgow, Lanark before settling in Bentham as in 1901 census. She dies at the age of 48 in 1904 at Wharfdale, Yorks

I'm sure you'll enjoy it and get a lot of help.
Are you aware of the various sites that are available for searching Scottish records?
Some free, some like ScotlandsPeople that can be a bit costly.

Nothing in Dunbarton on IGI from '27 to '37 that I can see.
If you widen the search to other counties then there are a lot more to choose from.
A free search on SP, using Soundex for Reid , Cath* '29 to '34 gives 26 results in the whole of Scotland.
Would cost 40p for that list - happy to do that for you. - In fact, I'm printing it just now.
Narrowing it down would be a lot harder. £1.00 per image.
I'm sure you'll get more help. I'm off to my kip now because it is 5.35am here.
I'll read your post again tomorrow when I'm refreshed!

It's a bit of a long shot but you could try searching the census for 1841, 1851 and 1861 for Catherine.
I did a quick search on 1841 census on SP, again using Reid with Soundex, Cat* as the first name where there was a Willliam in the household. I narrowed the age to between 7 and 12 to cover the years you suspect for her birth. There are 9 possibles.

Perhaps someone with access to the 1841 census could check them for you but without more info it'll be hard to narrow it down.
Do you have no clues to her parents names? Does it not show them on death or marriage cert?
