2 Christening lookups at St Gluvias
« on: Friday 21 December 07 01:32 GMT (UK) »

Hi

Could anybody help with a full lookup for 2 christening at St Gluvias

NICHOLAS HALVOSOE STANLEY  Christening 11 JAN 1805   Saint Gluvias Cornwall

Father:  N. HALVOSOE    Mother:  JANE STANLEY

JACOB STANLEY  Christening:  01 MAY 1829   Saint Gluvias
Father:  NICHOLAS STANLEY    Mother:  MARTHA

I am firstly trying to establish if Nicholas was illegitimate or whether there is any note as to his fathers occupation. Basically - any additional info at all

In the lookup for Jacob - I am trying to find whether an occupation is entered for Nicholas (eg - mariner) which may explain why I can't find him on the 1841 census

Nicholas married Martha??? (marriage not on BVRI/IGI) and had several children who were christened at St Gluvias. Martha and the younger children are split between 2 of the Cornish workhouses in 1841 but no sign of Nicholas

The family emigrated to Australia between 1841-1851

If a marriage for Nicholas & Martha can be found at St Gluvias - that would be the icing on the cake

Hi,

The only marriage I could find for a Nicholas Stanley was at St Keverne on 13 May 1827, when he married Martha Ching.

Any good?  Smiley

Hi

Thank you so much - I reckon that's the best match I'm likely to find - particularly in view of this IGI entry for one of the children

RICHARD CHIN STANDLEY  Christening:  05 JUL 1835   Saint Gluvias, Cornwall,

Father:  NICHOLAS STANDLEY    Mother:  MARTHA

That seems to fit in nicely  Wink  Glad to be of help.

Can't find any more on the baptisms that what you already have, but it does look at though Nicholas was illegitimate.  Unfortunately there are no transcriptions at the Cornish Studies in Redruth of baptisms, only marriages.  I could go and have a look at the marriages for you and see if Mr Halvosoe and Ms Stanley got married any time after the baptism of their child?  Just let me know.  Smiley

Hi again

Just found out that Nicholas was transported to Tasmania as a convict and arrived on 21.11.1837 which accounts for Martha & family being in the Workhouse in 1841.  (His youngest son was only 8 months old at the time of his deportation)

Thanks to you finding the marriage - I have found Martha's christening on the IGI.  They names their second son after her father

MARTHA CHIN  Christening:  29 JUL 1806   Saint Keverne
Father:  RICHARD CHIN   Mother:  MARY
