Have you tried contacting Stockton Register Office and asking them to check their records? They are always very helpful and would check the parents before you bought the certificate.

Depending on where he was born, he may have come under Middlesbrough registration district if not Stockton.
There is a Robert W registered in Middlesbrough in 1916 and another Robert there in 1917, they may be able to look up their details too, if not, Middlesbrough reg office is 01642 729004.

I was thinking birth well after husband had died! I checked the full index 1914-18 and there were no Galloway births with mother as Pready except Doreen - that was Preaddy which is a spelling I would not have thought of! I also wondered why he was sent off to her mother. Where did Doreen go? What did the mother die of? Who registered her death?

Freebmd has a 1914 (June quarter) marriage of Robert H Galloway and Lily S Pready in Sunderland.
The cwgc (www.cwgc.org) lists the death of Gnr R H Galloway on 5.06.1917 and describes him as age 29, son of Mr & Mrs James Galloway, 17 Hurst St, Wheatley Hill, Co Durham. Lily is not mentioned but next-of-kin data is quite variable in the WW1 records. Gnr R H was in the Royal Garrison Artillery, 90th Siege Battery and his body lies in Nieuwerke churchyard. Freebmd has a Robert Galloway birth in the March quarter 1887 in the Durham registration district.
Lilian S Galloway, age 28, died in Merthyr T registration district in the Sep quarter of 1919 so she was probably born about 1891. Freebmd has a Lily Pready birth registered in Weardale registration district in the December quarter of 1891.

I think that it may be time to send off for the birth certificate of Robert Burns Wilkinson Galloway. I found him on Freebmd (GRO reference Galloway Robert Burns W Sedgefield 10a 107 ) (Sedgefield Registration district included Trimdon) but I could not find him on the Tees Valley index. I think the Sedgefield records should be held by the Stockton Registrar but I am not certain. If you telephoned they might be willing to see if the father's first name was Robert. I think GRO will charge you return £3 of the £7 fee if you ask them to check and he father's name is not Robert. More experienced Chatters can sort me out if this is incorrect.

You sre right Gobbo. The GRO charge to check but the local office generally don't so it is always worth approaching them first. The certificate costs £7 whichever one you use.
