Does anybody have any information about this ancestor of my wife? He married Jane Farley on 7 november 1796 at Poling. I have been unable to get any further back for either of them. Any hints gratefully recieved.

Hi Unfortunately there is no further information on the Sussex Marriage Index. He is described as a labourer on his son, Luke's, marriage record in 1839. Have you searched the Poling parish register to see if there are further hints there? Witnesses etc. You should be able to get it at your nearest LDS centre (listed on familysearch.org) if you are not near the record office. Andrea

I was only aware of a daughter - Harriet born 1801.
I will look into the LDS angle as I live in Northants. I am VERY new to all this so thanks for the tip.

Hi If you are new to this then probably you do not know that a first port of call for all of us for pre 1837 information (and some later) is the LDS church site at www.familysearch.org If you go into that ignore the first search page (until you know your way around) and click the search button on the top. That gives you various options but I usually go straight to the International Genealogical Index bit. It is actually a list of ordinances for the LDS church and does not cover all parishes but Poling is there. If you search for Luke Snow it gives 23 hits. If you click on the Poling ones you then get further information. Choosing the Luke Snow who is baptised in 1814 shows you a batch number at the bottom of the record. Click on that and only put in the surname and you get all the other children baptised there. The IGI is a marvellous help to us. Just be aware that it is usually not sensible to rely on "member submitted" records. Extracted ones from the parish record should be OK but like any transcript you should always look at the original. I am a little concerned that there is no Harriet listed in 1801. Where did you get that information? If you look at the beginners board you should get more help. Have fun! Andrea

Thank you so much for the guideance, it is much appreciated.
I have taken over the family history search on behalf of a family member who is no longer able to manage it.
Harriet Snow was the wife of John Grevet. The link to Luke Snow with date of marriage to Jane Farley comes from a note in the files I have been given with no other information.
It seems that it may be wrong, and armed with new guideance I shall look further.
Considering I took this on reluctantly it is strangely addictive.....................

I expect you already have census information but if not Harriet and John are in Sompting in 1851 HO107 1647 F334 p4 John Greavat 54 Farmer labour b Sompting Harriet 50 b Poling Luke 15 George 12 Harriet 9 Elizabeth 6 all b Sompting As the name Luke is used it does seem likely that he is a relative. Someone is obviously doing that family as the census (on ancestry.co.uk) had been transcribed wrongly and had been corrected by a researcher. It will be worth looking at the original parish record to see if the Amy baptised in 1801 is in fact Harriet. Andrea

Thanks to all those who replied.
It does look as if harriet may have been the middle name of Amy so I have probably got the right people, but will be checking up with the original before too long.
