Hello. I have just found this website whilst surfing and as I have a Scottish Connection I thought it might be good as I am a Geneology Fanatic. I just registered so here I am ready to go.
I am looking for any information on my late father William Brodie Phillips born in 1926 in Inverness-shire and died in April 1976 in Aviemore Myrtlefield, he had one brother whose name I do not know except my mother told me he was a sailor. My father was brought up by his Aunt after his parents were killed in the Second World War. I know my dad was in the R.A.F. He was stationed in Derbyshire in abt 1950. Also if any member who visits the Tomnahurich Cemetery I wonder if he/she would be so kind as to take a photograph or two of my late father's buriel ground, but I will need to look for the plot number etc which I have got written down some where with the rest of the paperwork.
Many thanks.

Hi and welcome to RC.... I was thinking that if your grandparents were killed in the 1940s ..was it Scotland? Scotlandspeople have certificates on line....to buy. Do you have the names of your grandparents what about the name of your Aunt.... We need a little bit more to go on....to help. JO

Hi Kenjo. Thankyou for the welcome and your reply. Unfortunately I don't have alot of info to work on. I guess I'm going to have to invest in both the birth certificate and the death certificate. I did browse through this link http://www.cwgc.org/default.asp as there was a number of people from Scotland killed in the war, but couldn't see anyone from Inverness-shire, unless my father's parents moved from Inverness to another part of Scotland.

What you need first is either to buy the birth certificate. http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/bdm.html
Or does your mother have her marriage certificate.....this would have your fathers father named on it....seeming he married in England...
I have looked for deaths in Inverness....between 1930 and 1950...and there is no Phillips dying together....man and woman....but that doen't mean they aren't there....
I will post the names. JO

Hi Kenjo, thankyou once again for your reply. Of cause, I had forgotton that my father's father would be named on the marriage certificate. Providing my mum as still got a copy that she sent for 2 years ago. Failing that I will have to send for a copy of the Marriage certificate to.
I have also found the notes of my late father's buriel place with thanks to Fiona Morrison. I was surprised to learn that my father was buried in a paupas grave in 1976. Sad really. I didn't think there was such a thing as a paupas grave in this Century.
Merry Christmas to you and a Happy New Year.

Hi Kenjo.
Sorry I hope you wasn't thinking I was being rude by ignoring you. I have only just seen your post. I have got so many Ancestry and other websites bookmarked that I lose track of my postings ? I did actually send for a birth and death certificate from the Scottish GRO at a cost of £26.00. Unfortunately they sent me 2 certificates with the name William Gilmour McQullian Phillips, even though I asked for William Brodie Phillips, anyway I had to send the certificates back and they refunded me £16..00. But I still lost £10.00
The reference number that you posted is deffinately for William Brodie Phillips? Sorry I'm just being a little cautious after losing a tenner. Bless you for finding the entry and the ref number. I shall take a chance and order the birth certificate. I'll let you know when I receive it So he was obviously born in Glasgow and Joined the R.A.F. Base in Inverness, his brother whom I'd never even met Joined the Navy again the Base was in Inverness. Will I ever be able to find out who his brother was, even though I don't know his name? I know he was 2 years younger than my dad, so he'd have been born abt 1929-1930.

Hi There, I have checked and it is correct. I think you should look at what you sent them, as they are very reasonable, and I feel you may have sent them the wrong info. But you do need the marriage cert of your mother, and you do need the birth of your father. Good luck. Love to hear from you again, when you have sorted out, these certs.
Jo

Aww, thankyou so much Kenjo, your a gem I have got my mother's marriage certificate, so now to order a copy of my dad's birth certificate. I know his father's name was Robert (deceased) at the time my dad married my mum in 1950. My mum told me that his parents were both killed in the war and my dad was brought up by his aunt, not sure about his brother though.
I will gladly keep you informed when I recieve the certificate. Once again hankyou so much Kenjo

Hi Jo
I have received my father's birth certificate this morning. It looks very much like my father was illigitamate William Brodie Phillips Mother Sarah Phillips (char woman). William born 19th April 1927. It certainly a different birth date as to what my mother told me and no sign of his father Robert which was stated on my mother's marriage certficate Perhaps Robert didn't marry Sarah until after my dad was born, so if my dad had a brother as my mum says his brother could have a totally different surname. Or am I clutching at straws here.

What was his aunt's name? And who did she marry? This may give you a better idea of the background. He may have used his uncles name (Robert) on the marriage certificate.
