Hi,
I am descended from Anne Garde-Browne and living just a few miles from Coolcower House. I have done a little bit of research on the family and can tell you what I know. The descendants of the family who are living in Australia came to Ireland a few years ago to research the family and published a book. The draper A. Browne in MAcroom has a copy of this book: a number of its details, however, are imprecise.
William Garde-Browne, who lived in the mid nineteenth century, was a landlord holding approx. 1500 acres of land in his estate. He served as the justice of the peace in Macroom. He had a son and a number of daughters. Both father and son, however, were prone to alcoholism. Their dissipation along with various other problems all Irish landholders suffered in the nineteenth century, led to the reduction of their fortune. Eventually, after the death of their father, the family were forced to inhabit the lodge while the main house was rented out to the Warrens, another big local family who inhabited both Warrensgrove House and Warrenscourt House. The son died childless, while one of the daughters emigrated to Australia. Anne Garde-Browne, from whom I am descended, we believe to have married a local Catholic. Her granddaughter was my grandmother, Helena Horgan nee Dineen whose family were gentlemen (Catholic) farmers. Coolcower House was burned down during the War of Independence in the early 20th century, its inhabitants were given 5 minutes to quit the house and everything within was burnt. The house has been rebuilt since and is now a guesthouse. The Garde-Brownes were buried in the Protestant church in Macroom town, but their remains were disturbed during refurbishment of the church, which has now been deconsecrated.

I am researching William Garde BROWNE born abt 1819 Co Cork. I strongly believe his parents could be John BROWNE of Coolcower and Jane GARDE.
There is a death notice in the Irish Times Archives for a William Garde BROWNE Esq J.P. deceased the 17th of May 1877 at his residence, Coolcower House.
Any additional information to confirm the names of his parents or siblings would be greatly appreciated.

I too am interested in the Brownes of Coolcower.
The name John Garde Browne has come up, but I think my 5xggrandfather may be Richard Browne from Rockborough?
