Suspect the Army- possibly Royal Artillery?. Have traced a military family (R.A.) and they went from Ireland to England to Malta to Canada to England, etc.

Most certainly Army. The recommended next step would be to search for his soldier's papers at the National Archives. In order to do this you need to know his regiment (probably) and roughly when he was discharged.
This can often be achieved from a mixture of BMD and census records. Have you succeeded in finding the marriage and births in the military registers and if so do you have the certificates?

Could this be son Charles?: Charles Mitchell born 24 Sept.1868 Co.Kildare, son of Thomas Mitchell & Margaret Kerr. Have you found the family in 1881 census (an other census records)? 1881 Canadian & England/Wales census online at www.familysearch.org

What was Thomas' occupation in 1881? Found Charles' birth on IGI by doing parent search- other children not listed.

jsturner Glad you took my advice to post here for the amount of advice received in such a short time. There were Woolen Mills in Naas Co Kildare up to the late 1950s. Naas is about 9 miles from the Curragh.
