Gypsies and travellers were quite good at escaping the census enumerater.
but see this thread posted by Toni*

"having posed the question what if the difference between the two census i thought you might be interested in the reply :~
circus folk are not on the normal census records as they where classed travellers so they had a seperate census done which includes fairground gypse hawkers and general travellers"

Hi Kuri
From 1871 all "travellers" should be listed in the census in the normal way ie. as they appeared on the enumerators route. There was no instruction to include them in 1841 or 1851 though occasionally they were recorded by conscientious enumerators. In 1861 separate forms were provide to list those not living in houses and these are usually to be found at the end of each parish/district etc.. You might find the following link helpful as to who was and wasn't included:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/hitch/gendocs/census2.html#IT
The explanation on another thread makes no sense to me whatsoever http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,266055.msg1535371.html#msg1535371
Have you found your family in 1901 Kuri? Those details just might help somebody to locate them earlier if you can post them.

Marriage at Chalk, Kent 2 Mar 1896
James JAMES (age 21 or over) general dealer of Northfleet son of John JAMES shoemaker Alvina Eastwood BREEDS age 20 of Northfleet dau of John BREEDS general dealer
The marriage witnesses were Joseph JAMES and Emma BIGNELL. John BREEDS is listed as the father of Alvina but this doesn't mean that he was present at the ceremony - he may not have been alive even.

A double wedding with two brothers marrying on the same day
I was hoping the "brother" might be a good enough clue to accurately locate them in a census but I couldn't see them for definite.

Hi Kuri, I am a cousin to you from the same branch of the Breeds family........going back to John's father William born 1804 at Tenterden..........he was a brother to my 3rd g. grandfather, John Breeds born 1801 at Tenterden.
I can't see a post anywhere showing the info. you were looking for regarding James JAMES on the 1881 census.
I have located a James JAMES living in MAIDSTONE which fits with your branch of our family.
He is listed as a step-son, age 8, so born "about 1873" Also in the same household are his sisters Elizabeth James age 14 Harriett age 5
Head of Household is Thomas GLADMAN age 40 (step-father to the James children) wife is Harriet GLADMAN age 40 and also in the home are Rose GLADMAN age 3 Thomas GLADMAN age 11 months
Thomas Sr. is an Umbrella Maker
They were living at # 8 The Close, in the Stone St. Ward of Maidstone. All but Thomas Sr. were born at Maidstone. Thomas was born in London, Middlesex.
Does this sound like your James JAMES ?
Regards, Foxglove

Hi again Kuri,
I just checked at Free BMD and found the marriage of Thomas GLADMAN and Harriet JAMES Sept. quarter 1877 at Maidstone Ref. 2a 947
On the 1871 Census at Maidstone, I found Elizabeth JAMES age 4 with parents Samuel JAMES (age 28 and Harriett E. JAMES (age 29)
At Free BMD I found the marriage ofSamuel JAMES and Harriett NOAKES Dec. quarter of 1862 at Maidstone ref. 2a 832
Again at Free BMD:
Samuel James died Dec. quarter 1876 at Maidstone age 36 ref. 2a 350
Will see what else I can find.
Cheers, Foxglove
