Tomlinson mystery
« on: Tuesday 25 December 07 23:53 GMT (UK) »

Hi everyone - Happy Christmas! I am stuck with my great grandmother.  Annie Tomlinson married William Nixon in 1884 in Blidworth. She died in 1922, aged 62, so should have been born 1859/60/61. The 1891 census shows her as born in Sheffield. There are no Annie Tomlinsons born in the right year in Sheffield. I think either she was born to an unmarried mother who later married George Tomlinson - name not known, or she was born to a marriage with a different name, father died, and mother remarried George Tomlinson (father on marriage certificate), and she took on the name. In 1871 census there is an Anne Tomlinson aged 11 as a guest in the Notts area, and in 1881 census she is listed as the cousin of Reuben Kirk and Mary Kirk (maiden name Jackson) again in the Notts area. If anyone can help, I would be really grateful - very frustrating to be stuck with such a close relative!!!! There was an Ellen Tomlinson as an informant on the marriage certificate, who must either be a sister in law or unmarried sister. Look forward to any news.  Liz

Hi Lizzie18  Smiley

Welcome to Rootschat!

Firstly I'll just post the URL of the other topic you have posted about Annie Tomlinson, so people don't double up with their research:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,274945.0.html

Now, I've looked at the 1861 census and there is a Mary Ann TOMLINSON aged 1, father George, mother Rose Anney, born in Sheffield and living at No. 2 Walker St, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield (RG9/3494/49/8).  Long shot, but there don't seem to be any other %Ann% TOMLINSONs born Sheffield with father George...she is with her parents in the 1871 census though, so if you're sure that the Anne you found in 1871 is yours, then the Mary Ann that I found can be discounted.

Do you have any other information?  What was George Tomlinson's occupation on the marriage certificate?

Good morning Lizzie and welcome Smiley

The link is the Jackson family, as I'm sure you guessed.

Mary Kirk nee Jackson is the daughter of James and Mary.

In 1861 they have grandson Thomas Jackson age 2 with them, who appears to be the son of the Ann who married William Roberts. They had a daughter Ann abt 1835 who was in service 1861.

Marriage James Jackson and Mary Tomlinson Eakring 10/07/1831

So maybe your Annie was a daughter of one of Mary's siblings. Off to have another think!

A long shot, but maybe that's what you need right now!

Could this possibly be Ann/Annie mistranscribed as Amelia?

1861 Brightside Bierlow Sheffield
RG9 3494 67 43
George Tomlinson 29 drayman Ollerton (right area of Notts to be connected)
Mary 26 Farnsfield
Ellen 5 Sheffield
Eliza 4
Amelia 1

1871 George is a porter and seems to be re-married to a Mary c.1832 Derbyshire and no children with him. Possibly first wife died and second wife didn't want to take on the children (or they were already happily settled with other family). This man is still alive in 1901

I can't see an Amelia anywhere in other censuses, or a birth or death registration. But I can see possibles for Ellen and Eliza....

1871 RG10 3536 45 30
Bilsthorpe Notts
Ann Tomlinson head 84 not able to work Notts East Stoke
Eliza Tomlinson grand dau 14 Yorkshire Sheffield

In 1881 RG11 3362 117 55 an Ellen Tomlinson age 25 born Sheffield is a visitor to a Smith family in Nottingham. She is still unmarried and living Notts 1891
