Hi
First of all may I say I am getting my great great grandmother Olivia Wurswick's wedding certificate for her marriage to John Boddy in 1867 in Helmsley but at the moment she is about No5 on my list of certificates to buy and unfortunately the gas bill has to come first so in the meantime I am researching people with the Helmsley/Lancashire connection for her family. I had previously posted about Olivia and have to agree with fellow rootschatters that she is Allevia Worswick born June qtr 1842 in Clitheroe, there is no other Worswick's/Wurswick's around at that time with a similar name, she appears to be born in the Oldam/Lancashire area as she is shown asOlivia Boddy in the 1871 /1881 /1891 and 1901 census this ties in with another Worswick/Wurswick Sarah born Dec 1845 Qtr Chorlton in Lancashire and died in Helmsley Dec qtr 1867, who would appear to be from the same family now I have found two other Worswick/Wurswick's in Helmsley they are Elizabeth and Ellen who both married in the Mar 1854 Qtr in Helmsley, chances are they also originate from Lancashire but I just can't find anything in the 1841/1851/1861 census or bmd to tie these 4 women to the same family, even though this surname at this time was almost unkown outside the Lancashire area, and to find them all in the same area of Helmsley seems too much of a coincidence.

Hi Barbara
I was hoping to find a birth family for Ellen and Elizabeth to see if they tied in with Allevia/Olivia and Sarah in the 1841/51 census, or some evidence of them being in the same house/area around the 1861 census, but if Elizabeth was born in Robin Hoods Bay and not Lancs it doesn't look to hopeful. One thing that is driving me mad with some of my husbands ancestors is that they were journeymen and this has lead to several instances in census returns of yorks to lancs back to yorks back to lancs, and the same with some Norfolk families so I have a gut feeling that when I do get Olivia's wedding certificate it will prove it under her father's occupation. By the way I know you know your stuff so just incase Olivia's mum wasn't married would it show father unknown and no mention at all of her mother's name on the marriage certificate? So far every certificate has had a father attached but it's only a matter of time before one hasn't.

Hi Julie,
I suppose with a name like Worswick I would, like you, be tempted to think they might be connected if some turned up in the same area, away from where most of the others were born or living.
I've tried to find Ellen & Elizabeth in census together as I thought as their marriages were on the same page they may have been sisters and had a double wedding. The only Worswick family I can find is in 1841 Beverley:
1841 HO107/1219/13 fol.6 p.6 Riplingham, South Cave, Beverley, Yorkshire - with a note at the side saying 'encamped & not included in the totals at the bottom of this page' WORSWICK Joseph 35 Cotton Weaver Y Elizabeth 35 N Maryann 12 Y Pattiania or Pathania 10 Y Francis (male) 7 Y Ellen 5 Y Elizabeth 3 Y Joseph 1 Y
I can't find this family in later census though, still looking- you'd think at least Pattania would be easy to find!!
As to the occupation journeyman, that doesn't necessarily mean they travelled around the country, just that he's finished his apprenticeship: Journeyman - A tradesman who has served his trade apprenticeship and mastered his craft, not bound to serve a master, but originally hired by the day. The name derives from the French for day - jour. see http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/i-k.html#J
Re Olivia - if her mother wasn't married you might be lucky and have her named on the marriage cert, but more likely it will show father unknown or just a dash in the column - look on the bright side, it may have his full name !!

Hi Barbara
Thanks for all the info it is looking unlikely that the Worswick sisters are related to Olivia/Allevia, mind you on one census as Olivia Boddy her married name it does say she was born in Helmsley just to confuse me even more. I was just looking through some of the census returns that I had downloaded on my 3 days free ancestry (wonder if they'll ever repeat it) and too be honest if I hadn't known what info I was looking for on them I would never have been able to find it, so it's not surprising all these weird and wonderful names disappear from census returns, pity complete families, streets, towns, villages and counties do to, wonder if we have a secret bermuda triangle in Yorkshire
Thanks Julie

Hi Barbara
That's the trouble with these rare surnames nowhere in sight then as soon as you find one then half a dozen turn up always in the wrong part of England, wrong year or perhaps even a bigamist going by the number of marriages that you can sometimes find accredited to a person with no sign of a divorce or death for an earlier husband/wife.
Time to walk the dogs unfortunately, where's my wellies and brolly
Regards Julie

I started reading this on the Lancashire board, I see you have found Joseph in 1841. This looks to be the missing Sarah with Joseph. It looks like they moved around so much they couldn't remember wher the children came from.
RG9/3156/53/3 Joseph Worswick,59 Elizabeth Worswick, 60 Sarah Worswick,16 Francis Worswick,29

Hi Derek
Many thanks for your reply, it does look like there could be a link with Olivia and this Joseph's family, Sarah's age does fit with this death Dec 1867 Sarah Wurswick 21 Helmsley 9d 253 , perhaps the family settled in Helmsley for a while around the time of Olivia's wedding a few months earlier, it's interesting how the death has Wurswick, the only other one around this time was George Wurswick who also died Helmsley Births Mar 1866 George Wurswick Helmsley 9d 389 and deaths Mar 1867 George Wurswick aged 1 Helmsley 9d 267. If we are talking about the same family he must have been Joseph's grandson. I did find the following marriage which might cheer Barbara up, I think I've found Pattania in Marriages Jun 1864 Pethina Worswyck Kendal 10b 987, if as I suspect the family were illiterate and had strong accents it would be possible for Wurswick to sound like Worswyck or Worswick.
