KNOCKIN (or KNOCKYN) CASTLE
« on: Wednesday 26 December 07 22:01 GMT (UK) »

I am descended from the le Strange family of Knockin, near Oswestry, and a while ago I saw on some site I have never found again, an artists impression of Knockin Castle which is long gone - I have since seen photos of where the bailey and motte castle used to stand, but have never again found the site with (I think) a gallery of old long-gone buildings, they may even have been from a book.
At the time I did download it, but was still researching at the time exactly which branch of the le Strange famly I was from, and deleted it.
Does anyone else of this family know of this artist's impression of the original Knockin (or Knockyn) Castle.

I did a bit of Googling and came across these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knockin_Castle

http://www.rootschat.com/links/02hr/

http://www.yourtotalevent.com/people/STRANGE%20in%20Shropshire.htm

Not exactly the answer you were expecting, but hopefully helpful Wink

Thank you Lloydy for the information - I didn't know about the chappie who drowned the child and was followed by the ravens.
It was several years ago that I saw this picture of a painting of an impression of Knockin Castle, at the time I did print it off, but as the Strange line wasn't proved then which exact line I was from, I eventually threw it away. Now the line has been proved and I cannot find it - I think it was in a gallery of paintings.
Many thanks

The only other thing I can suggest is that you contact the Shropshire Archives.

They may have some kind of catalogue of Shropshire paintings etc etc, you never know it may be worth a telephone call/email.

Good Luck!

That's great!!!!!  The Shropshire Archives are really helpful, aren't they?

I see you are in New Zealand......I have distant cousins there, mainly Auckland and Palmerston North.  When the piggy bank is full, I hope to be able to fly over for a visit Cheesy
