Birth look-up please for Lucy Who?

I do have another post open for a look-up for Lucy Greaves, but now beginning to think that she was registered under her mother's name.

If anyone is going to Derbyshire Records Office, could they please look for a Lucy Huh

born c. 29 January 1884. Her father's name, according to her marriage cert, was Daniel Greaves, but now think that her parents were not married.

Hi

It is not possible to look up birth entries to get that info even if the surname is known. Without the surname - it's impossible

Do you have any clues at all as to a possible surname

Hi Polly,

Don't you think she was the illegitimate daughter of one of John and Sarah's daughter's ~~(Rachel maybe?)~~ and named her uncle as her father at her marriage?

Are you very sure of the birth date? There's a birth registration in June 1893 Chesterfield that could fit the bill?

edit: Don't think it's Rachel after all - she marries in 1882 Sad

Hi Polly

A long shot I know - but have you considered the possibility that both Lucy & Samuel may not have been connected biologically to the Greaves family? They may have been the children of a neighbour/friend/relative who died and were then brought up by the Greaves family and given their name

Thanks Tati and CaroleW (also for the pm reply Carole)

I am sure of the birth date as she was my 84yr old neighbour's mother. Just cannot find a birth registration for her to send for a certificate, so thought that if someone could look for a baptism (maybe I should have put that as the subject?) record for that period at the records office for a Lucy (surely can't be that many, as it wasn't a common name then, was it?) and find out her mother's surname, then I could get the cert. (She wasn't the Lucy Greaves registered at Stourbridge, as I have checked that out).

I did present my neighbour with a booklet with all (well. at lot!) of her family info at Christmas, but the name of her grandmother left a big gap. And it's bugging me!

Yes - Lucy was a very common name in those days. The 1891 census has 228 Lucy's born in Derbyshire between 1883-1885

Baptisms could take place weeks/months and sometimes years after a birth - and sometimes not at all as there is nothing to support a baptismal entry in Lucy's case

If Lucy was baptised under another surname - how would anybody know whether it was the right "Lucy" entry? It's looking most unlikely that Daniel was her biological father and if she was illegitimate, we don't know her mothers name so there is no way of making a connection to the Greaves surname

If she was baptised as Greaves - you don't know which church the (possible) baptism took place in so you can imagine the task of looking through every baptismal record for every church from February 1884 - whenever

They were living in Killamarsh in 1891 and Lucy is shown as born "Mosbro" (Mosborough) and Samuel in Holbrook which may be a clue to possible churches for baptismal purposes
