Gilbert Angus is recored in the following census returns
1841 HO/107, Piece 566 Book 13, residing Norfolk St, Liverpool
Gilbert Angus 40, Mariner
Jemima Angus, 30
Elizabeth 7, Peter 5 and James 3
1851 H0 107/2187 Folio 95 Page 4, residing in Liverpool
Gilbert, 53, born Shetland, mariner now warehouseman
Jemima Angus 43, born Liverpool
Elizabeth 18, Peter 16, James 12, Margaret 6, William 3, all children born Liverpool
1861 RG9/2703 Folio 558 Page 42, residing in Liverpool
Gilbert Angus 63, born Shetland dock labourer.
1871 RG10/3799 Folio 53 Page 28, residing Liverpool
Gilbert Angus, widower, 73, born Shetland. former seaman
Census returns 1851-1871 are consistent, that Gilbert Angus was born about 1798 in Shetland and moved to Liverpool before 1841. There is an IGI record for Gilbert Angus marriage to Jemima Edwards in Liverpool in 1832. I have nothing more on Gilbert or Jemima.
I wonder if anyone can add to Gilbert's earlier history?

Possible sibling for Gilbert showing on the IGI,
Andrew Angus
chr. 8th November 1787 in Delting, Shetland
Father Gilbrt. Angus, mother Christian Irvin
Unfortunately there's no other births/christenings showing for this couple. They married August 1787 in Delting. However, there are a few Gilbert Anguses showing in the district who may be related in some way.

Trying to find Gilbert's early history with so little background was always going to be a long shot, but it was worth a try.

Hi Gerry,
The Shetland Family History site (bayanne.info/Shetland) has a Gilbert Angus born 1796, Firth, Delting. His parents are given as Peter Angus (b. 2 Feb 1755 Delting) and Margaret Cogle (b. 29 Jul 1770 Toft, Delting). Gilbert is shown to have married Jemima Edwards and had family Elizabeth 1833, Mary 1835, Peter 1835, John 1841, Margaret 1844, and William 1847.

Many thanks for directing me to the website (www.bayanne.info/Shetland) and for all the records you have found, a great way to sign off in 2007, some family history traced to the 17th century 
The IGI records Gilbert's marriage to Jemima. Census records show she was born c.1808 in Liverpool but I have not found her birth record and have nothing on her family/ancestors.
In addition to the family you have listed the census returns for 1841 and 1851 also record a son, James, born c.1838 in Liverpool. I cannot find his birth record but this does not matter since the main role in the family history is William born c.1847 - his full name was William Gilbert Angus (who named one of his sons, born c.1877 in Liverpool, by the same name).
