Hi Piper
Have you seen the following thread?
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,261434.0.html
Local directories or electoral rolls would seem to be the logical starting point, especially if the name is unusual and you have an address.
Alternatively, you can look through birth registrations for records with the correct mother's maiden name - a long task though!
A general post mentioning the surname either here or in a local paper might help?
kind regards, Arranroots

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply, where would the electoral rolls for the Buckhurst Hill, Loughton area be kept?
I have partial knowledge, as I have a Mother who was known as something other than her actual married name, a generic foreshortened name (Edie) for the daughter, and a full name for the daughters husband, but can find no trace of their marriage or him on Ancestry's BDM site so I am not 100% certain that is right either.
Hence the frustration
I am glad though that from reading the thread you pointed me to, I had done the right thing by being cautious about disclosing such recent information.
So thanks again, electoral rolls seem to be the answer, but where are they kept?
Regards Piper
