Groton House, anyone?
« on: Saturday 29 December 07 10:18 GMT (UK) »

Hi all, new here, I wonder if anyone can help.
I'm trying to trace an Elsie Long, b.1890, to see if she was related to my family (long story!).
I have found her in the 1891 census living at Boxford, near Sudbury, but believe that she may have been 'in service' nearby at Groton House around 1908.
I have read that the Groton House of that time was burnt down about 30 years ago. What I'm trying to find out is what family owned it in the early 1900's? I gather it was a very big place so I imagine some kind of ancestral home.
Thanks for any local help.

Hi Cornsilk - nice challenge to start you off !

Looking in both Boxford and Groton Parishes in 1901 (only about 40 odd Enumerators Pages), I cant see a Groton House - theres a Groton Place and Groton Hall in Groton itself, but neither dwelling is of 'Ancestral Home' proportions, one being occupied by a Stockman, and the other a Farmer - with one servant....

any idea of its exact location ?

Good find !

The inset map shows Groton Place and Gosling Green, which I saw when trawling the enumerators pages ...... wonder if the enumerator just didnt name every dwelling ? - unlikely if it was a big place with loads of servants ?

Maybe somebody else will spot it ?

Wow what an active forum, so many replies so quickly.
The info I mentioned about the house burning down came exactly from the google search that Sem73 did, ref http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/185892
Bit foxed by the other replies with Folio references - I presume these are references into the census, how can I use these references to find the census page? I use normally ancestry.co.uk
Thanks.

just plug the numbers into the boxes at the bottom of the 'advanced' search box - the first one is pre-labelled as RG in front of the PIECE box, then the next box is Folio, then finally Page....

so 1881 is RG11; PIECE is 1834 etc ....

I live in the same benefice as Groton (and Boxford)  and cycle around the area.
Groton is made up of several hamlets, Parliament Heath, Gosling Green, Broad Street, Horners Green, Castlings Heath and of course Groton Wood.

I can remember driving around the area several times when my son was much younger and was at a birthday party in Groton 'just down the road' took an hour to find the house!

Groton Place is now in appartments and one of the residents is the LHR for the Parish (if you would like to contact him please PM me  Wink

Groton House was situated in Groton Park - which is found on modern ordnance survey maps.  Or you could try www.old-maps.co.uk

Groton Hall and Groton Place are near each other south of Groton House.

Poplar Street is at Gosling Green.
Broad Street nearer to Groton Park.House.

Great stuff, suffolkmawther.
Is there any chance that you can point me at anyone local who might know something about the history of the original Groton House?
Needless to say, I have googled etc but drawn a blank so far.
Many thanks.

Yes, the LHR  Smiley

I will PM you with his details.

LHR = Local History Recorder for the parish.

Whilst it is our task to record the events of today for the historians of the future, I have yet to meet a LHR who isn't interested in the past history of their village.  I have met the Groton LHR and he is also involved with Parish Council etc and very interested in the history of the village.

It is a very interesting place and has lots of links with America as Groton's Winthrop villagers were founding fathers of the USA in 1630.

You may find Ray's www.cosford-database.co.uk helpful.

And Simon has photographs of the church at www.suffolkchurches.co.uk

Thanks again for all this so far.
Looking at the 1881 and 1891 census it seems that my assumption that Groton was perhaps an 'ancestral home' was incorrect - the owners changed, and in 1891 the owner was a barrister.
Both censuses show servants though so my original guess that Elsie was 'in service' is still looking good.
Shame the place seems to have been omitted or moved for the 1901 census. I've tried seaching on some of the 1891 names but drawn a blank so far.
What I'd really like to do is find the name of the owners in say 1905-1910....

I have a couple of Kelly's directories and White's too will see if I can find anything relevant.

Might not get back until tomorrow - expecting husbands family for a couple of days stay with us (husband has BIG birthday tomorrow - 31st).

I remember that the village produced a Millennium book of Groton - will try and find out more on that - it was sold out when I wanted to buy a copy!

Happy New Year
