poor law records post 1835 or broadwater parish records
« on: Saturday 29 December 07 15:15 GMT (UK) »

Does anyone know if these exist on line? I am trying to track down a Mary Ann possibly Fisher born 1816 Broadwater. I have her in 1841 with 2 children (both Fishers the first born 1835) as a pauper. I am wondering if this was her married name or whether both children were illegitimate (she had another daughter in 1845 before moving to London & presumably remarrying to Richard Lloyd- however I can find no marriage) and access to either the poor records or the birth records might shed some light. Many thanks.

NicoC,

Poor law records of West Sussex are online.  See this site:

http://www.westsussex.gov.uk/ccm/content/libraries-and-archives/record-office/family-history/poor-law-database.en

You're lucky with the Broadwater parish registers too.  A very helpful chap has transcribed them here:

http://www.barriesgenealogy.co.uk/html/broadwater_worthing.html

I think the same chap has added some of them to the Sussex-OPC site.

Hi
I had a quick look at those sites and could not see her but it was a very quick look!   I can find her in 1841 with Clara and Mark but did not have any luck in the 1851.  Does that confirm her place of birth as Broadwater?  Getting the birth certificate for the child in 1845 might show her marital status.

Thanks both, I have trawled through those records and cannot find either Mary Ann or Clara or Mark I can find no Fisher at all- just a Fishwicke which cannot be her as the family are still there post 1846 when Mary Ann moved to London & got remarried. Mary Ann is in all censuses as being born in Broadwater & Clara too (Mary Ann marries Richard Lloyd and has further children & Clara stays with the family until her death). I also can find no record of her daughter (Mary Ann again) born 1845 supposedly in Broadwater, either in those parish records or in the bmd records. It is all very peculiar!
