Hi, I have found my Daniel reeves in the 1842 Quarter Session Indexes with the types of documents noted as ''Recogn'' and ''Examn''. Before I send for details of these documents, what would these abbreviations likely to be referring to ? Also how much detail should I likely expect.? (sourced from Familyhistoryonline)
Allie and Keith found him for me in the 1841 census in my first foray into Rootschat a while back. occupation unreadable. (Many thanks to you both for the welcome and the help )
I found him recently in the 1851 census (under Reever) as a letter carrier. Would they have to sit an examination to be a letter carrier?
Any thoughts on this appreciated.

Hi Tootsiepie
The "Recogn" would be 'Recognizance' - dicionary.com has this definition:
a. a bond or obligation of record entered into before a court of record or a magistrate, binding a person to do a particular act. b. the sum pledged as surety on such a bond.
"Examn" I would have thought would be 'Examination', as in the interrogation of the person on trial, or the witnesses.
Hope that helps

Thank You Prue, It looks as if he may have been a naughty boy
I've sent an enquiry to Shropshire FHS to see if I can get a copy of the full entry and cost involved.

I think Shropshire Archives holds the originals so you could get in touch with them as well, and compare access, price etc.

Hi Fay, I received a reply from a lady called Sue on the 18/12 saying
''I am passing your enquiry over to John Ravenscroft our chairman who will have the best information on this. Sue Harvey''
I realise that this is a bit of a busy time of year for everyone, so I'll wait patiently, hoping for a reply sometime in the New Year.
Fay, I hope I don't have to visit in person , because it just won't be possible in the next 12 months. Too many commitments this year, holiday weeks all accounted for, mostly with babysitting grandson.
Hi again Prue, Thanks for the tip on the Shropshire Archives. I'll send a query this weekend and see what happens.
I'll keep you both up to date on any replies.

Hi Pete, That would be very kind of you but please check there will be no expense incurred, as I wouldn't like to inadvertantly cost you any money.
If the entries can be copied by hand (if they aren't too long) I would appreciate it. Details below , found on Familyhistory online.
