Bolds of Midlothian

I know John Bold was born in Midlothian in 1790s, but I cannot find his birth record. His oldest son was Walter, so presumably his father was Walter Bold. There was a Walter Bold living in Dalkeith in Midlothian at the right time. Walter Bold was also witness at baptism of 2 of John's children, which would again suggest he was the grandfather. Any ideas how I can make the link?
