Please can anyone help with tracing a James Gardiner, known to live in Oxford latter part of his life. I have a marriage certificate for him and Ellen Heather for April 3rd 1893 but I have been unable to find a birth for him. His age is given at 22 yrs on the marriage certificate and they were married in Guildford. Many thanks. Pete

So you have a marriage certificate. There is other information on there which we could use to help. Do you have any cenusus?
May we have it all, rather than searching using only part of the information?

Hi Pauline, thanks for replying so quickly. His father is listed as Edward on the marriage certificate. The census of 1901 could also be him as he was 22 yrs old when he married in 1893. The following is from the marriage certificate: He was a bachelor when they married residing in Aldershot. Father Edward Gardiner who was deceased. Wife is Ellen Heather aged 21yrs a spinster residing in Stoke I think. Her father Thomas Heather (I have his birth certificate) who was also deceased. They were married in the Parish Church of Guildford in Surrey. Not sure if there is any further information you need to help me, but if so, please let me know. The only census I have is 1881. Thanks Pete

I'm quite confident the 1901 is correct - seems to all fit in, doesn't it? Ellen Heather was born ca. 1873 at Cobham according to previous census.
This looks like James' mum Ann in 1891:
1891 RG12/1163 130 7 Littlemore, Oxfordshire Oxford Rd Ann Gardiner, head, wid, 49, Laundress, b. Littlemore William, son, 29, Ag lab, b. Oxon Cowley Edward, son, 15, Ag lab, b. Littlemore Mary Green, mother, wid, 75, b. Oxford Sandford on (something)
(I can't ID James in 1891)

The witnesses are Henry George Briant and Annie Briant. The occupation appears to say General but is quite difficult to read. From census could be general labourer? Thank you
