Bonar (Bonner)/ Toner/ McGettigan/ Devenny/ McMonagle/ McGinley etc
« on: Sunday 30 December 07 19:54 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

I was given some information about the funeral of one of my relatives that took place in 1907 in Letterkenny, Donegal. His name was Father James Toner and by all accounts he was much loved by all who met him. He was only 48 when he died.

The funeral was attended by well over 500 people from all parts of Donegal and Derry and literally closed the town down for the day.

Unfortunately I have only part of the description. I would love to get the entire obituary because it apparently listed all the parishioners and other local people that attended which would be a goldmine of information  Smiley

I thought I would list the principal mourners in the event that someone else is also looking for these people  and may be able to give me more info about this part of my family Smiley

Hi Mab:
Linda Buckley has a wonderful site for Donegal. You might want to check it and perhaps drop her a note.

Hi are you still out there since December 2007. I hope so, I am so excited by your entry.

My Mcgettigans were at your relatives funeral, why?

I have never come across a Toner surname connected to our family.

We will have to exchange some information.

Yes I'm still here. To be honest I haven't looked at my family tree for ages and ages. I met so many brick walls that I stopped for a break. I've been working on my husband's tree instead.

I received this information from a researcher who lives in Letterkenny. I had posted somewhere about the name Toner and he had seen it. He is researching the history of the priesthood in and around his area. Out of kindness he faxed me the obituary of James Toner. My Great Grandmother was Bridget Toner who married Alexander Bonner. As you can see the McGettigan's are cousins but I don't...can't remember if I ever figured out the connection to the Toners.

What townland are your McGettigans from? And, where are you?

Hi Mab and Geraldine.

The cousin Mrs Lafferty, Creeslough would probably be Grace McGettigan who had recently married Dan Lafferty the postmaster there then.
The Laffertys still run the post office and quite a few businesses in the town!

It would be good to know the way that Grace's McGettigans are linked to the Toners?

I wish I could tell you but as I only found out that my Great Grandmother was a Toner 2 years ago I am as much in the dark as when I started my family tree.

I have since been given some details of a memorial inscription from the Conwal Cemetery which is as follows:

Rev. James Toner C.C. late of Drumoghill died 19 June 1907 age 45
(Ellen McGettigan was the informant on his death certificate)
his mother Bridget Toner died 21st May 1889 (I don't know her maiden name)
his father Peter Toner died 08th August 1899

.....Peter Toner and Bridget were my Great Great Grandparents and were from Kirkstown.....

Jim Toner died 25th May 1989 aged 82 years (no idea who this is)
his wife Bridie Toner died 26th July 2001 aged 86 years

Peter Toner died 05th June 1930 aged 75 years (James' brother  Huh)
his wife Kathleen Toner died 10th Nov 1949 aged 79 years
their son Peter Toner died 03rd Sept 1957 aged 54 years

I was hoping that the maiden name of my GGGM would be on the stone but unfortunately not  Cry

Something I just noticed.......my dad had to get a record of his baptism for some reason. I was just looking at it. He was baptized at St. Eugene's Cathedral, Derry by Rev. J.L. McGettigan.

Hi, I'm still checking the posts weekly!
(broadband hasn't reached Creeslough yet)

Derrylass, thanks for the marriage date of Danny Lafferty and Grace McGettigan.
Was that just from and index or is there more information like parents names, addresses etc?

Cheers

hello all,

I came across your postings and thought I should give you some data in relation to the Toner's.
Fr. James Toner's  sister Mrs. Devenney's name was Frances,  Her husband was William Devenney.  They lived at Drumnaught , Conwall.
He also had a sister Anne

His aunt Susan Toner married Micky Beag Mc Ginley. ( Breenagh )
They had 10 children -  Alice, Annie, Maire, Mick, Patrick, Peter P.T. ( cu Uladh )
Jimmy, Bridget, Susan ( Drumbologue )and Cornelius.

There was also another aunt Mary Toner who married Hudie Mc Daid ( mc Devitt ) only know of one son James.

James Toner who died 25th May 1989 aged 82 was probably a son of Peter and Catherine ( Kathleen ) Toner Kirkstown.   James and his wife Bridie lived in Kirkstown.

Which of the Toner's married ? Mc Monigle ?

Unsure of the Mc Gettigan connection, perhaps Bridget Toner (Peter's wife) maiden name was Mc Gettigan.   I will check if there is a birth record for their son Neal as according to the 1901 Kirkstown census his age is given as 35, which if correct would mean that he was born 1866.  Civil registration commenced 1864.

Killymard parish census 1901
Household - Mc Gettigan - John and Mary, Patrick, Bridget, Fanny, James,  Joseph Christopher Monaghan, Annie Dorrian.

Hope this has been useful
