Hi,

Did not have enough time to finish reply yesterday, you could try getting in touch with the Priest at St. Joseph's, The Rock, Ballyshannon, County Donegal. they should be able to give you some information about this. www.magheneparish.ie

Hi all,
I have just come across this very relevant topic.  My great, great, great grandparents were Mickey Beag McGinley and Susan Tonar.  Thus, Tomby I would be so interested in the family tree that you have. Can you tell me anything more about them please?

its the McGinley side. my great-great grandmother would have been Susan McGinley (Micheal and Susan's daughter) and she married a Bernard McGinley who I have no information on.  thanks

Hi, While I don't have any specific information on recent Bonners, I was reading the 17th. century Irish life of Colm Cille last night and I happened on an interesting legend. I'm sure you know that the name Bonner (in the north of Ireland, anyway) is an anglicisation of the Irish Ó Cnáimhsigh. The word cnámh means bone. According to the account in the life of Colm Cille, the saint was once passing by an old tomb and saw the bones of a man called Connla the Smith, who had been dead for a long time. He rearranged the bones and prayed over them and they came back to life. This man then married and lived for over twenty years. He had children and his descendants are called the Clann Chnáimhsigh because they were descended from a man who had once been a pile of bones. I'm not suggesting it's true, of course, but it explains the name and what the Bonners in Donegal believed about their own origins. Smiley
