Crompton Terrace, Nechells
« on: Monday 31 December 07 18:56 UTC (UK) »

Hi
Can anyone tell me where Crompton Terrace in Nechells would have been situated. I have got this street name from my Grandfather's marriage certificate from his first marriage. This is the address given by his first wife as her address. I would be most grateful if anyone out there could give me an idea where this was, as this is the only thing I know about his first wife apart from her maiden name.  They were married in 1899 if this helps
Thanks

Hi Angelgirl

Welcome to RootsChat!  Smiley

I haven't found Crompton Terrace, but there is a street of terraced houses called Crompton Road which shows up on both the 1890s map www.old-maps.co.uk and modern maps

http://www.rootschat.com/links/02g5/

I wonder if this would be the same place?

kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Hi Angelgirl,

1901 census only has Crompton Road too.

If you'd like to post details of her name, age, and father's name and occupation from the marriage certificate, someone may be able to help you to trace her further back.

Hi
Thanks to Arranroots and Barbara for the replies about Crompton Terrace. As suggested here are the details from my Grandfather's first marriage certificate:

bride's name: Louisa Brown , age 22, no occupation - just a line striking this column out.
address: 5 Crompton Terrace.    Father's name William Brown, occupation: Spoon maker.

They married on December 25th at St Clement's Church in Nechells, in the county of Birmingham.
My Grandfather's name was George Radford.

I don't really know any more apart from the fact that he married my Grandmother in December 1918.

I have not been able to trace Louisa's death either, between 1899 and 1918.

Any help or advice anyone could give on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Tricia_2

Many thanks for the information. I did not know about the history group. I am sure I will find plenty to interest me on the site, because a lot of my ancestors came from that area.  So once again - many thanks for taking the time.

Hi Tricia_2
Thanks for all those links and the name of the book.  I have made a note of all of them. I'm sure they will help me a lot with my research.  I have only been researching my family history for a short time, and like everybody I have lots of unanswered questions. I have been focusing on searching for the people up till now, but I feel I should learn a little about where they lived in order to get an idea of what their lives would have been like.

Thanks again

Hi there, dunno if you ever did get the answer you wanted, but Crompton Terrace is in Elliot Street, Nechells.  Its a row of terraced houses at right angles to the street, with a wide pedestrian path, not a road (although some cars do park up there) and it still exists today.  It is almost opposite Elliot Street school, which still exists too.  My ancestors lived at no. 2 at one point.  Theres about a dozen or so houses in the terrace, maybe a few more, but thereabouts anyway.

whoops !! (red faced now)  I went down there to check it out.  What i said was crompton terrace was actually Brockley Place.  I had a look around in crompton road and found a row of houses behind those in crompton road.  theres only a few houses left now and there is no road access as such.  maybe this is crompton terrace.  didnt see any street names as i was in the car at the time.  sorry about the original mistake.
