I don't think I've asked for help with this one before but if I have I apologise for wasting your time
Well, here goes. Am looking for further infomation on my g grandmother, Vashti HUMPHREYS, BORN 1863, Notgrove, Gloucester, died 1925, Ayr, Queensland, Australia. Father Lewis HUMPHRIS, mother Mary Ann JAMES. Already have extract from census as follows :-
Here is the 1871 census. Louis Humphris 1838 Admington Gloucestershire.occ shepherd Mary Ann wife 1838 Condicote Glouc. Thomas son 1861 Condicote. Vashti dau. 1863 Notgrove Glouc. Albert son 1864 Barton Hill Glouc. Reginald James 1867 Westall Hill Oxfordshire. Mary Ann dau 1869 (no place of birth given) family living Weston upon Avon Gloucestershire
1861 census Thomas Humphris 1803 Condicot Glouc.occ ag.lab Dianna wife 1803 Longborough Glouc. LEWIS HUMPHRIS son 1838 Condicot occ shepherd family living cottage Condicote..
1851 census. Thomas Humphress 1802 Condicote occ ag.lab Dinah wife 1804 Longborough. LEWIS HUMPHRESS son 1838 Condicote. Hannah dau 1841 Condicote. living Condicote. (supplied by a kind lady on GR).
Lewis married twice, the second time to Mary SHEPHERD in 1872 (who had 2 children from a previous relationship) and I have a family story, written by this Mary's great grand daughter, which states that Lewis and Mary Anne (James) had 6 children who were put into an orphanage and returned to their father after his second marriage.
The family came to Australia on the "John Rennie". leaving Plymouth in 1872, arriving Bowen, Qld, Aust in 1873.
Have checked the IGI but no record of Vashti's birth but extracted records of James & Ester (b1865, d 1865) and Albert, b. 1864.
Can SKS verify Vashti's birth and birth of her siblings please? Also, if it's not stretching the friendship too much date and place of marriage of Lewis HUMPHRIS and Mary Ann JAMES?
TIA and all the best of good wishes for 2008.
Regards Jan

Had a quick squint at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm#PageTitle for Humphris at Notgrove.
There's a few there and the last on the page is Albert the son of Lewis and Mary Ann Humphris b. 24 April 1864 in Notgrove. Then there's Esther and James . . . . .
Perhaps you should reconsider your request or at least recheck the census enumerator's sheets for something's amiss.
Happy New Year
Chas

Well for Vashti this is the closest I could find
It is from a typed index not the hand written original so could be a mis-spelling
VASTITE HUMPHRIS STOW ON THE WOLD 1862Q3 6A 339

To Chas and Tazzie Thank you both for your replies. Chas, I already have that info on James, Ester and Albert - James and Ester died shortly after birth according to the IGI. Tazzie, your info on Vashti could be the correrct one, thank you. Lewis was a shepherd so could have moved around a great deal. As mentioned in my first post, I have a story written by the great grand daughter of his second wife, Mary Shepherd, which states that she (Mary Shephed) thought he had no children but discovered he had 6 that had been placed in an orphanage. What I was hoping for was some proof of these 6 children. The manifest of the ship they came to Australia on shows the names of Lewis Humphreys (note the different spelling which was the same as they used in Aust) aged 33 Mary Humphreys aged 30 Thomas "" aged 12 Vashti "" aged 10 (making her birth date 1861/62) Albert "" aged 8 (which confirms the IGI entry) James """ aged 6 (which could or could not be the IGI entry as there is a death date for him as well) Mary Humphreys aged 4 Ann Humphreys aged 1. Then there were two children of Mary Shepherds' Lucy Shepherd aged 9 Albert Shepherd aged 6. The census info from my first post was kindly supplied by a member of GR so I assume that it is correct So what I could appreciate is any information you can supply about the birth of Thomas, James, Mary and Ann Humphris/Humphreys (father Lewis mother Mary Ann James) and a possible lead as to the marriages of Lewis and Mary Anne (James) and Lewis and Mary (Shepherd). Have tried the FreeBDM and IGI without results. I know I am asking a lot from you all and I really do appreciate your efforts. So any help will be greatly received. Regards Jan

Jan
Just returned from the RO, having found the following:
Condicote PR
Thomas Humphries bachelor otp and Diana Hopkins spinster otp married 6 May 1825. Both made their marks X. Witnesses William Hayt (?) and Daniel Pearce. Both signed.
Condicote PR
Baptisms of children of Thomas and Diana Humphries: Catherine 30 July 1826 James 24 Nov 1833 Ann 28 June 1835 Louis 25 May 1838 Esther 29 Jan 1840? (not clear) Diana 7 Mar 1841
No marriage found for Louis/Lewis in Condicote, but Stow-on-the-Wold registration district covers about 22 parishes (including Condicote and Notgrove). I looked at the closest, but no luck for this or the later marriage. You would need to send for the marriage cert from the reference Tazzie gave you for the 1859 marriage to discover exactly where they married.
Baptisms of children of Lewis and Mary Ann Humphries:
Thomas 23 Dec 1860 Condicote Vashti 27 July 1861 Condicote Albert 24 April 1864 Notgrove James 15 Aug 1865 privately Notgrove Esther 15 Aug 1865 privately Notgrove Reginald James 14 July 1867 Condicote
Looks as though the James on the ship's manifest was Reginald James, as his age fits.
No sign of Mary and Ann at either place, nor of the the two Shepherd children. The family seems to have moved around a little, as you suggest, and I wonder if they might have strayed over the border to Oxfordshire.
Both Lewis and his father Thomas were described at the baptisms as labourers.
Hope this helps a bit. If you have any other clues as to the place names, I'll have another look, but just didn't have time to search through 22 parishes!
Regards,
Gillg

There were other Humphries/Humphreys families in Condicote around the same time. If you want the details of these, please let me know.

Hi Tazzie
Yes, Stow includes Upper and Lower Slaughter, Upper and Lower Swell, and Great and Little Rissington, among others. Quite a wide area, in fact. Thank goodness I found most of these Humphries in just Condicote and Notgrove!
I actually got to handle the original Condicote parish register - it's so much more exciting than looking at fiche or film.
Thanks for pointing me towards Stow.
Regards,
Gillg
