Do you have a more specific area in Surrey?  Do you have John's marriage to Mary?  Have you found the family in the censuses as this will give you a place of birth for John & possible baptism record.  Lots of questions I know but the more information you can give us the better we can help  Smiley

this is all I know
George was born in 1821 in Richmond surrey according to the 1851 census I found for him, by this time he was living with his wife Mary Ann whitticks in manchester. On his marriage certificate to Mary it has his father as John a cabinet maker and the wedding took place 25 DEC 1841 at st Leonard's shoreditch, his wife Mary came from middlesex...it seems that  a lot of people from surrey-London were shipped by canal up to manchester at some stage I wonder if they were part of that ?  I don't have Johns marriage to Mary or any baptism records and there may well have been brothers and sisters as the Cooke's tended to have large families, I live in new zealand so I am not to sure how large Surrey is or how populated it would of been at this time but in the records that I have searched through it doesn't seem to be a common name in the area...well not as common as it is in manchester...I would be very grateful for any light you could shed...where is the best place to look for records before1800?...thanks...sue

Sue, I'll see what I can find out through my resources a little later today (bit busy at the moment)
Surrey is a large county not only covering rural parts but also encroaches into parts of Metropolitan London.  How do you know John, the cabinet makers, birth & death dates?

Sue, I've had a look through the 1841 & 1851 censuses to try & find the father, John the cabinet maker but without much success.  I think you need to find the Richmond parish records to find George's baptism.  If you have an LDS centre near you, you can probably order the film.  It would be helpful to find John on the census as it will show where & when he was born which would take you back another generation.

I've checked the Surrey Marriage Index for John and Mary's marriage but no sign so it must have been in the metropolitan area or London or Middlesex

Thanks for your help...the dates that I have for john and his wife I got from David Cooke a distant cousin on genesreunited but sadly he no longer seems to be getting his mail ( he probably let his subs expire) so I have no idea where he got them from and no other way of contacting him...I was sort of hoping that he belonged here as well, according to his tree on genes this is as far back as he has got

Morning harewoodhouse

I tried to do a search for Mary's death in 1836 with no success. I thought that might at least establish whereabout they were.  No success though. Undecided

Roll Eyes  David answered his e mails at long last only to tell me he didn't give me the info on john and Mary...hmmmm so I wonder who did Huh  I have a guy who thinks we are connected but his john who married a Mary last name unknown was born in buckinghamshire to a family of farmers...I suppose he could of moved to Richmond become a cabinet maker and had a son....but I think it is a long shot...other then being called john Cooke and born around the same time I think thats it as his family of Cooke's don't look like they ever moved he has them in buckinghamshire right back to 1665...back to square 1 george born in richmond
