Hi morag

Are Alexander's parents shown as alive on his marriage cert ? I would do a search of death certs for both if so. The death cert will give parents names.

If they died pre 1855 is more difficult as deaths did not have to be registered then.

Cheers

Hi Morag

There are two possible death certs for a Donald MacKay in North Uist that match your dates

Died 1863 MACKAY DONALD MACPHERSON   aged  81 NORTH UIST  and

Died 1876 MACKAY DONALD   aged 66 NORTH UIST

These are on Scotland's People and will definitely give parents names.

Still looking for Rachel

Best Wishes

Ann

Hi Morag

Not finding a death cert for Rachel which suggests she died pre 1855 before statutory death certs were introduced.

I had a look for a birth in that neck of the woods just to see and only 1 came up

Born 17/11/1779 MATHESON RACHEL Father ALEXR. MATHESON (No mother's name) Lairg SUTHERLAND

This could be your Rachel

Also not finding a marriage for Donald and Rachel but it would be an OPR so parents names not likely to be on there - is very unusual if they are.

Hi Morag

There are other Donald MacKays who died around same time in Invernessshire. Could he have died elsewhere and not on Uist ?

Hi Morag,

I expect you will have noticed the IGI records of birth of children to Donald Mackay and Rachel Matheson in North Uist:

Mary Mackay 05 Aug 1829
Alexander Mackay 25 May 1833.

I could not see a record of their marriage and perhaps it occurred before the Parish Register commenced. It is unlikely that the parish register would indicate their parents, in any case.

Hi Morag,

My Mackays are mostly from the parish of Durness, Sutherlandshire, which is part of what was known as "Mackay country". It seems like every second Morrison married a Mackay and my family was no exception.

Hi, again, Morag,

I have just remembered that there is a gentleman by the name of Blair MacAulay, who lives here in Oakville, Ontario, that has records of most of the families that lived on North Uist. If you send me a PM with your email address, I will try to put you in touch with him.

Morag,

I have noted your email address and I now suggest you edit that posting and remove it, for privacy reasons.

I have sent you a PM (personal/private message) telling you how to send a PM.
