Hi
I'm wondering if anyone has any knowledge of what railway companies would have operated out of Birkenhead 1890 - early 1900's. My great grandfather Richard WILLIAMSON is listed as a Railway engine driver in the 1891/1901 while he was living at Elm Road in Tranmere (I think it's Tranmere). If I find out the company It might set me off on looking for other records if they exist? Any help or comments most appreciated.
Cheers
Doggy

In the 1902 Cheshire Directory there were the Great Western, London & North Western, Midland, and the Shropshire Union Railway & Canal Co.

Hi Stan Blimey, this is going to take some further investigating! There were some other railway workers living on the same Road and I wondered if a railway company may have built the houses for their workforce?
Cheers again

Hi Doggy There was a large engine shed between Birkenhead Central Station and Green Lane Station in those days and the Birkenhead Woodside Steam line ran by there (I think in those days you could get the train from Birkenhead to London)
If you go to the old-maps link below, search for Tranmere. Select the Cheshire option and then select No 5. This is Tranmere 1899. The engine shed is at the top centre of map. On the middle left of the map you will see the Birkenhead Union Workhouse. Immediately to the right is the present day St Catherines Hospital and Elm Road runs from left to right immediately below the hospital. The engine shed was within walking distance (although it would have been uphill all the way home).
This doesn't help in finding which company but perhaps if you look for a Railway enthusiasts website they may be able to point you in the right direction.

Thank you all for your contributions, I have checked the map and it's really fascinating to see how the area has changed although I believe Elm Road is still there but the housing probably isn't. It must have been interesting living next to the workhouse and the hospital! At least there was a park nearby!! Unfortunately my G Grandfather died before my father was born so we don't know too much about him other than what we can find on the censuses etc.
Cheers again

On the 1912 OS map there were only two main railways on the Wirral, the Birkenhead line of the London & North Western and Great Western Joint Railway, which went through Tranmere, to Woodside station, and the Great Central Railway which ran from Connahs Quay round the west side of Birkenhead. At various times there were many amalgamations and joint companies in railway history so that may not have been the position in the 1890s. I think I'm right in what I'm about to say....
The major main line station in Birkenhead in 1890 would have been Woodside, gone now, but it was right next to the Woodside ferry and the bus station (how's that for an integrated transport system - couldn't manage that nowadays).
Woodside station was a joint LNWR and GWR terminus. The line ran into London, Paddington IIRC.
See photo below - the station is to the right. If you would like to see what it all looked like pay a visit to Birkenhead Museum - the one in the old town hall in Hamilton Square. In there you'll find an absolutely fantastic model of the station and surroundings as they were in (I think) 1934 - the day the king came to open the tunnel (something like that anyway).

Oh, and BTW - I think Elm Rd. may still be standing. I'll be in the area next weekend and could have a look if you'd like. Even take a picture or two.

Hi Les
That would be wonderful if you could see what's still there. My nan was born at number 26 Elm Road. I've tried to look at google maps and it doesn't look like much there but you never know! In 1927 when she married she was living at 209 Church Rd Tranmere and my Grandpa was at 271 Woodchurch Road. I've also found some wonderful old photos of them both from the twenties with lots of friends playing tennis and on the back of the photos it say Park Grove. I've tried to google this but there appears to be a RC Primary school there. I don't know whether to do a separate posting about this, what do you think?
Cheers again

Hi Steve
Welcome to Rootschat. Thanks for the extra info on the railway history in Tranmere/Birkenhead. I have loads of leads to follow up when I get a spare hour or three.
Thanks for the offer of photos, however Les (Scottiedog) has already provided me with some great shots.
Cheers again
