To be young is to be as one of the immortals
|
Hi, Everyone, I'm trying to chase up a perhaps unlikely link between a series of entries on the IGI for Fitz and for the POOLE family, and the same family in Long Wittenham, Berkshire, soon afterwards. If anyone is privy to the Fitz (now where might I find this place today in the Shrewsbury area?) Parish Records, I'd very much like the following entries checked for any extra detail. On 13th Feb 1804 Francis POOLE married Margaret THOMAS, and then appeared to have three children baptised to them: Richard in 1805, Thomas in 1807, and a John in 1810. Was this last baptism (if indeed it was a baptism - I'm sure I've seen somewhere on IGI a POOLE death for the exact same day - 2nd April) followed by a burial for John? And did this family disappear from Fitz soon afterwards. It's just that I'm wondering whether the same Francis and Margaret POOLE moved to Berkshire and the John POOLE baptised at Dorchester, just up the road, on 3rd July 1814 might have been their child. A Francis and Margaret POOLE, and also a married John and Mary POOLE, are both living at separate addresses in the 1841 L. Wittenham Census. keith N.B. I've just noticed that there's also a Clara POOLE baptised in 1810 in Dorchester, Oxon, so maybe I'm barking up completely the wrong tree!

Pete, That's really very kind of you to look those up for me... And thanks to these entries it looks very much as though parents Francis and Margaret POOLE had been peacefully interred in Shropshire soil by 1811. (Is Grafton a village or hamlet near Fitz or Shrewsbury, may I ask?). By the necessary process of elimination I realise now that I must concentrate my search for a Francis POOL(E) marrying a Margaret pre-1810 (Clara born 1810, John born 1814) in the Dorchester/Long Wittenham area of Berkshire (as was before the 1974 County reorganisation). keith

Hi Keith
Your welcome. Fitz is a tiny hamlet ab 5 miles from Shrewsbury on the way to Oswestry, ( my older brother got married in the church many years ago ) Grafton is but a stones throw up the road, ( my Sis in law was born in Grafton ), I just tried the spelling Pool for your surname in Fitz
22 Nov 1804 Richard Pool bur. 18 May 1807 Thomas, s. of Francis & Margaret Pool bap. 07 Sep 1811 Francis Pool, s. of John & Ann Gough bap.
I missed these due to using exact spelling, Terrible when they can leave the E out just to confuse us lot,
Best wishes Keith, and if you think I can help here in Shrops, give us a shout
Pete
P.S I took a short cut today and drove past Fitz church, I must confess I thought of your post

Hi again, Pete, Thanks very much for tying up those loose ends re the POOL(E) family in Fitz - and thanks for the geography lesson re Fitz and Grafton! You may have noticed that thanks to other kind Rootschatters I have made further very definite progress with this family on the Berkshire boards. But I do know Oswestry from when a kind person put me up there for the night once when the traffic dried up when I was hitchhiking as a student across from London to Anglesey in about 1969... And now I always enjoy the scenery on the drive westwards along the A5 between Shrewsbury and Bangor. Very best wishes, keith
