Help 5 brides for 4 grooms 1837 Yeovil
« on: Wednesday 02 January 08 13:33 GMT (UK) »

Hello,

I think I have found a marriage I'm looking for.  I have James Palmer marrying a Hannah their first child is named William Hayward Palmer.

In 1837 4th quarter Yeovil, Somerset Dis 10 Pg 825 there is a Hannah Hayward marrying.

On Ancestry, Free BMD etc, there are 5 females and only four males.  No sign on James Palmer.  Does anyone have access to check this quarter and find the missing groom please??

Thanks
Joan

There should be only eight names so there is one name too many, not one missing. These pages have been retyped from the originals so it seems that there has been a mistake in one of the names listed in transcribing the original pages

Hi Joan,
The GRO indexes have 4 marriages (eight names) prior to 1851, and 2
marriages after 1851,

In "A Comedy of Errors, or the Marriage Records of England & Wales 1837-1899" by Michael W. Foster, he says
"The typed indexes, especially the earlier ones, suffer badly from mistyping of the volume numbers, page numbers and district names. This can frustrate searchers who are looking for names in particular localities"

Hi Stan,

To make things even worse,  now I have found a James Palmer marrying 1839 2nd quarter in Wellington Som, Somerset and there are only THREE names on the page.  Surely they could not have mixed up

1837 4th quarter Yeovil with
1839 3nd quarter Wellington Som?Huh

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Joan,
From 1837 to 1851 the sheets for the quarterly returns of marriages had spaces for up to   four marriages on each side of the sheet, so there could be one, two, three or four marriages, or two, four, six or eight names.

Hi Joan,
The entries on FreeBmd are
DEALY  George    Wellington  10 790
PALMER  James     Wellington  10 790
PHILPOT  Mary     Wellington  10 790

However if you look at all the entries for Wellington for that ¼ there is PEARCE Ann   Wellington 10 78[80]
Looking at the page on Ancestry it is PEARCE Ann   Wellington 10 790 and is the missing entry.

Thanks Stan,

At least I have a better knowledge of how the system works if nothing else.

Stan,

I'm glad you said that,(the missing girl being Ann Pearce)cos that's what I thought too!

I'll advise Free BMD of their error  Cheesy

Joan,

Does it actually help you though?  Roll Eyes

Hi Joan,
I have looked at this quarter's entries and there are eight pages with odd numbers of marriages, on four of the marriages the typist has obviously put a 3 instead of an 8 in the page number, but that still leaves four pages, 801, 811, 825 and 826 with odd numbers.
