I think it likely that Michael and Mary Ann married before they crossed the water.  I don't think Michael was in the 1871 English census, and I can't find a marriage for him.

Any of these birth certs would give the mother's maiden name.

Births Jun 1872
DUFFY    Ellen        Cockermouth    10b   546
Births Jun 1874
DUFFY    Mary         Cockermouth    10b   583
Births Dec 1876
DUFFEY    Ann Jane         Cockermouth    10b   566
Births Jun 1879
DUFFY    Catherine         Carlisle    10b   509

There were 2 mary's born 1874.
Mary Duffey, Q4 and Mary Duffy Q2.
Ann Jane Duffey Q4 1876  and Catherine Duffy, Q2 1879
If you send for the certs, you can specify parents so they will only send you the correct ones in Mary's case.
