Help with a marriage please! - Completed
« on: Monday 25 February 08 15:47 GMT (UK) »

Hello there!

I am trying to find some marriages in Sussex.

The first is between a John Press and a Mary Washer sometime before 1835 (when the first child I know of was born)
John was born Jevington about 1817 and Mary was born Ringmer about 1819.

The second is for the parents of the above John.  He is John Press of Framfield and she is Maria also of Framfield.  Their first child was born about 1815.

I'd be very grateful if someone could locate them for me.

Many thanks in advance

Hi Kerry

Could you by any chance locate Maria's parents marriage too - he is Thomas Jenner and the wife Elizabeth (Unfortunately Framfield is not on the IGI!)

Cheers

I take back everything I said  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes  You have a choice of two!

Thomas Jenner and Elizabeth Watkins 31 May 1787 at Framfield or

Thomas Jenner and Elizabeth Hobden
9 July 1788 archdeaconary of Lewes Marriage Licence
he is a bachelor of Chailey 26+
she is spinster of Framfield 21+
Sponsors TJ, Richard Hobden of Chailey, yeo

married at Framfield on 10 July 1788 by licence

Hmmm it is a tricky one because Maria Jenner (according to some ancient notes) was baptised 25 May 1787 in Framfield but not marked as illegitimate - perhaps the vicar let them off because the banns were being read??

So I'm tempted towards the first one.

What do you think?

Sounds more likely then, the vicar may have looked kindly on them if he knew they were just about to get married.
