1841 or 1851 census Bishops Stortford area please
« on: Monday 03 January 05 18:19 GMT (UK) »

Hi I would be ever so grateful if any one can assit.  My GGG Grandad  Samuel Perrin was apparently born in Bishops Stortford the in c1832.  I know that in 1871 he was living in Bermondsey, London but cannot find him or any trace of him before this date.  He married a Caroline Barker who was born in Westminster.   1837 does not appear to have a record of his marriage.  I would love dearly to find anything out about his birth.

Thanking you in advance

Welcome bronzekitten Smiley

I think that I may have found Samuel in 1841, but it might not help you much because he is not living with his parents.  The 1841 does not gives relationships nor place of birth.  Adult ages tend to be rounded to the nearest 5.

HO107/434/2 Folio 19

Newtown, Bishops Stortford.

Name, Age, Occupation, Born in County? Yes/No

PORTER Lawrence, 45, Shoemaker J (probably journeyman) no
PORTER Ann, 45, no
THURGOOD Thomas, 80, Carpenter J, no
PERRIN Samuel, 13, (Visitor has been written and then crossed out) yes
PERRIN Thomas, 4, yes

I don't have a name index for the 41 I'm afraid, but I checked the rest of this enumeration district and couldn't find any other PERRINS.

Sorry

Hi Rick

THANK YOU SO MUCH - this is definitely my Samuel Perrin - I have been hunting for him for ages and just cannot belive you have found him for me.  I know that he had a young girl called Thurgood living with him in London and I have recently sent for her birth certificate to see if there was any relationship.  I hope one day I might find his parents but the age of 13 for hi would be correct as I beleived him to be be born around 1830.  So I may find I come to a halt.

SO MANY MANY THANKS

Vicki

Do you have his marrriage certificate?  This will give you his father's name and occupation.

HALS holds all the Parish Records for Bishops Stortford, also the LDS have many films for Bishops Stortford which you can hire and view at any LDS Family History Centre worldwide.

;)Thanks again for your help.  I won't give up - I'm a woman with a mission.

I will let you know if I ever find his parents.  A couple of days ago a new entry has appeared for his name in  1837 online of a marriage in 1859 no mention of a woman - so I have applied for this and am hoping it might lead me to his parents.

THanks

Vicki

Hi,the clue to this little mystery was Thomas Perrin age 4 in 1841 as mentioned by Rick.If you go to this link and search Perrin in the Bishops Stortford section http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyHertford.htm#PageTitle
you will find his 7 sisters and another brother. No mention of Samuel but he fits into the birth dates.
They are all the children of George Perrin and Eliza.
From the IGI George married Eliza Thurgood(another clue) 2/7/1820 St Michaels,Bishops Stortford.
I,ll leave the rest to you but from what I have seen on the IGI you should be able to go back a couple of generations.
