Help with a marriage please!
« on: Wednesday 02 January 08 18:03 GMT (UK) »

Hi

My new year's resolution is to finally knock down a brick wall I have been banging my head against for the last few years and I'm hoping someone may be able to help.

I am looking for the marriage between William Darry (or could be spelt a number of other ways) and Helen/Nelly Cockburn.

I have successfully located the children all born in Berwick between 1799 and 1812 on the IGI but can't go any further back until I have found the marriage.

There are several possible baptisms for Helen/Nelly in Duns but I cant be sure which one is correct but nothing for William.

I can only assume they married in Berwick.  I can't find anything on Scotland's people either.

Any assistance would be really appreciated.

Hi KPM  Smiley

If you think they might have married in Berwick on Tweed, that is in Northumberland so it might be worth asking on that county board as well.

Hi Gadget

Thanks for your reply.

I'm quite sure it wasn't Berwick on Tweed, I'm sure it was Duns, Berwick.

However I will bear this in mind and it may be worth a posting if nothing else comes about.

Thanks for your interest

Hi Ann-Marie

There is another Baptism in the OPR's for William DARRY and Nelly COCKBURN.

George 10 July 1798 at Duns, Berwickshire.

If the naming pattern was followed here is a possible Baptism for William DARRY.

William DARRIE 20 Dec 1761 Langton, Berwickshire
Father George DARRIE.  Mother Helen CARSSEN

Hi Helen and Beckey

Many thanks to you both for your replies - both of which look very promising.

According to William's daughter's marriage certificate he was a Gardener so this looks good.   William and Nelly also named one of their daughters Helen - possibly after George's wife.

Also William and his wife did have a daughter named Elizabeth

Do you think that Helen Carssen and Helen Creswell could be one in the same - perhaps an error in transcription?

Anyway - this has really given me something to go on

Once again thank you both for your help
