The drapers, david and mary, and peter and his unc

David Draper
« on: Wednesday 02 January 08 19:13 GMT (UK) »

I am looking for more information on my ggrandfather david draper. he was born in 1857 in sherfield on loddon. He worked as a farm carter at hunts farm sherfield hill in 1881 british census. Where was hunts farm? who owned it? how long was he there? where did he go from there? and where did he live before? I'm absolutley lost. I would love to see some pictures of this area, and would like to know where he and his family were buried. His wifes name was mary brown, and they had many children, one who was Peter draper b1887 basingstoke. Any info from anyone familiar with this area would be greatly appriciated.

some info on Sherfield in this site ...

http://www.envf.port.ac.uk/hantsgaz/hantsgaz/hgdndx_f.htm

and some 20th C photos here ...

http://www.francisfrith.com/search/england/hampshire/sherfield%2don%2dloddon/photos/sherfield%2don%2dloddon_photos.htm

A lot of info can be obtained from GOOGLE - eg:-

The manor of Sherfield on Loddon is not mentioned in the Domesday Survey because at that time (1086) it formed part of the manor of Odiham. In the late twelfth century it was granted by Henry II to his marshall, William Fitz Aldelin; from him the property passed to the Warbertons or Warblingtons and thence in 1274 to John de Wintershill. The Warblingtons once again held the manor in 1281 and it passed by marriage to the Puttenhams. One of the Puttenhams was the author of the first attempted philosophical criticism of English literature, "The Arte of English Poesie" published anonymously in 1589. In 1572 the manor was divided and sold in two lots, both of which changed hands frequently after this date. In 1838 the estate was purchased by the Duke of Wellington.

The Church of St. Leonard dates from the fourteenth century although the chancel was rebuilt in 1866 and the steeple in 1872. The only vestiges of the former church are some mediaeval windows containing fourteenth and sixteenth century stained glass. It is said that Oliver Cromwell gave to St. Leonard's Church the bells which survived uncracked from the siege of Basing House.

The parish contains several properties which bears traces of moats, due perhaps to the abundance of water provided by the tributaries of the River Loddon. The Loddon itself is immortalised in the poetry of Alexander Pope.

Ref your 1881 questions, Hunts Farm was split over 2 enumeration schedules - the other family in occupation looks like Frewern .... the head of household was a gardener ..... so its not clear who owned the dwelling or indeed if it was still a farm.

If you look at a map of the area you should be able to find it in 'Sherfield Hill' ... Wild Moor is certainly shown  .... altho the area is just on the edge of fast-expanding Basingstoke, so some places may have been swallowed up ...

By 1891, they have 7 children.

Altho the address looks a bit different (Sherfield Hill Cottage), I think they are in the same place virtually as in 1881 - still Sherfield Hill area overall, and adjacent dwellings seem the same.

In 1901, still in Sherfield, they have moved back to the 'Wild Moor' area, and occupy Ducketts Farm.

RG13/1110; Folio: 78; Page: 16 - Sherfield on Loddon, St Leonards E-Parish
David is now a Farmer, Wood Dealer and Carrier - his fathers occupation, and there are 2 children under 10 there - still 7 in total.

If you need the childrens names, just ask and I'll transcribe 1891 and 1901.

For deaths and burial you can search FreeBMD and make enquiries of the local churches .... it may well be that someone local is on this site and can help further with those burial details .... most likely in St Leonards ...

thank you so much for this information! I actually have a picture of david and mary although I am not sure where it is taken, i think it may be outside where they lived. I wish I had a pic of the house and surrounding area. I checked out the francis firth pics, but without much knowledge of the area, I cant really say they were helpful. I'm wondering what is in that area now? is the house or parts of it still standing? is there anywhere that would describe the farm they lived at? Im from canada, so Im not sure how the houses and roads work in hampshire. I was at the library today and I couldn't find anything in the atlas that was helpful for hampshire. I can find the river loddon, but what is the sherfiled hill? I know, a hill, but what i mean is where can I find an old map with the roads and stuff to orient myself to the region? im rambling, sorry. I would like those transcriptions if you wouldn't mind...i think more of peters siblings came to canada (he came in 1910) but i am not sure.

Have you searched Hampshire CALM database?

http://calm.hants.gov.uk/DServeA/search.htm

Amongst otheres items, it has an auctioneer's poster for the sale of cottage, in the occupation of Daniel Draper in Sherfield-on-Loddon.
