I live in Markfield. My family were born here. There is one very old school house left tucked away at the back between the old cottages Main street and What is now the New Vicarge.Their was another house in what is now known as the Mellenium Gardens and what is left of Land swopped for Altar Stones playing firelds on which new houses have been built but this was demolished before 2nd world war.The Memorial Hall that in recent times is known as the Miners Welfare Institute was owned by the Parish in 1800s.Rector Mathew Phillips and Reverend James Gochlan. All the lands were known as Dandy Hay Farm in the 18th century .Some of the land owned by the Dalley familyDoctor Daleys family lived on he Min Street.Srah Dalley lived in a small cottage inside a party stone wall.Originaly their was an old bar standing astride the wall with the Vicars carthouse at the end.Nothing in the middle. At one time they kept pigs .Their were pig stys in the middle .The vicarage was originaly onthe corner of the Nook Markfieldwhich is now converted to flats when the new vicarage was built. In 1906 or therabouts a second Indenture was drawn up re an Alderman Tidd whom was custiodian of it for the community of Markfield. He died in 1920 .A third Indenture was then drawn up in 1921 between a Francis Geary Landlord of the Red lion public house and an Edward wapples miner.Their was a village commitee of about 18 people inclucing a Mrs Lillingstone who was the secretary .Over the years it was used for many things including a cinema throughout the first world war and was the venue of the Pow party WW11.In later times as a bingo hall, for voting and vegetable shows. It was named the Memorial Hall in Memory of all of those who died in the first world war .No one knows really how it came to be known as the miners welfare Institute as up until its closure 3 yrs ago any money had been given by the community of Markfield. Not by the Coalboard which since the closure of the collieries have only acted in the capacity of bankers/ brokers .If you go to LANSCAPES HERITAGE site many people have written their stories which you can either read or listen to.I do remember the village fair and maypole dancers and the morrison dancers. The ice cream man was a horse and cart .We ice skated on Groby Pool.Could buy a potatoe for 1p.There are many people still in Markfield whom can recall how things were before the motorways were built.Particulary Kirby Muxloe.Bloods Hill ect Many Landscape photographs .It was known as bloods hill as a policeman cycling home was tripped off his bike and his blood ran down the Hill.Markfield is supposed to be the heart of GB.Re the Marking of the field in Roman times. My Grandfather told me that men had rode from John O Groats in Scotland and Lizard Point in Cornwall.Meeting in the middle. And later re Battle of Bosworth field was officialy Named Markfield by James Ist.Coalville was not named until 1932 .If you look at the TITHES maps it does show everybody living here at that time and how the lands were divided up.Many lands were tenants. Many people rented lands rto farm and provide food for their families. On the Tithes maps you will see the Parish ownership of the Memorial Hall .The conversion of it has been done at different times .No planning so never registered as a building.Only known as.The Hall was closed because their was only one remaining Trustee whom had not bothered doing anything muc h with it for years. It is very badly deteriorated now and with the closure of the Charity/Trust is now left to deteriorate with no legal owner? I have some old film of Markfield showing the Hall in May day. There were a lot of col;ections for hospital funds .Floats.Fancy dress .May day parades. All sorts.Every season had a reason .The village was ruined by All the New houses. We used to have fields far as the eye could see.We used to walk miles as children with my father all over our landscape and we were free to be children and SAFE.! We had few cars .We had to walk everywhere.I am grateful we have a bus service..It is true one never quite knows if the bus will come on time or at all but as most of the time the buses are empty with everyone having cars maybe its not cost effective.?Anyway this helps in some way.Susie .

I would Love a basnd stand.Think it is a good idea would cheer the village up.Great .! Think we should also provide the village with a public toilet and lights.Does any one know what is hyappening to the Memorial Hall/Coalminers Institute. We should all be focussed on this now to Insure that the money stays in Markfield.Susie.x

We could utilize the bandstand for public meetings like we used to do when I was a child up on the Green.Do think think this is a good idea and really have those with the money ever spent it sensibly.?Someone should write to our local newspaper The markfield Clarion and ask the people of Markfield."What do you want."Particularly the Memorial Hall which is falling to bits at the moment with no one caring for it . Wish the people of Markfield would get together like we used to and stop moaning about things we cant change and focus on all the things that we can! Come on Markfield.Speak up.!
