SUTHERLAND - CALDER
« on: Wednesday 02 January 08 21:11 GMT (UK) »

Charles SUTHERLAND married Jean CALDER at Elgin on 2 May 1807. Are there any descendants of this family? Does anyone know details of Charles SUTHERLAND? ari123

The online IGI only shows record of one offspring of this couple.

JANE SUTHERLAND - Christening: 24 APR 1810 in Rafford, Moray

Hi there,

I'm in no way sure that my Jane Sutherland is the same lass - the year of birth is different.  Mine was born in Elgin according to the 1861 census.
(1861 census @ uppertown findon portlethen banchory devenick kincardineshire
william jamieson 51 born aberdeen crofter of 28 acres
jane wife 46 born elgin morayshire - this info has just been given to me by Ev - thanks so much!)

There is a gravestone for William and Jane in the Portlethen Church cemetery saying:

Erected by the family

In memory of their father, WILLIAM JAMIESON who died at Upperton, Findon, Dec 30th 1889 aged 79 years.
Also their mother, JANE SUTHERLAND who died Jan 1st 1883 aged 67 years.

Just thought I'd add this to thread, just in case.

I am in Australia, you in NZ? - do you have any idea about where the places Jane Sutherland christened, married and died - are in relation to Elgin? date not too far out.

Hi Ari,

Yes, I'm in New Zealand Smiley I don't have much on Jane other than the census notes I just got and the gravestone notes.  I have her and William on their son William's death register.

They had 10 children.  If you want more of what I have you are most welcome or you can check out this thread:

Thanks for 'thread of Jamieson/Sutherland 'family - very interesting. My interest is Charles Sutherland - born 1788/91 in Scotland (all I know). In 1834 he was a Widower, married Phoebe Ann MESSER in St Alphage, Greenwich, London. Charles was a Colonial Banker in London. When I checked scotlanspeople site for a Charles Sutherland, married in Scotland, the Jean Calder marriage came up in Elgin in 1807(he was associated with families there later) ; then someone found only one daughter Jane from marriage (dates seem way out to me - a second marriage? maybe).
If naming pattern anything to go by - Charles' children - Margaret, Phoebe, Robert, Barbara Bethune, Mary Ann, Charles. Charles associated with MASSON, FERRIER, DUNBAR ('shipping magnate') families in Elgin & London.
Cheers  Ari
