Conflicting religious denominations (baptisms/marriages)
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 13:16 UTC (UK) »

I have a very general query which I will try and explain as concisely as possible. I have been researching my paternal line (Wilson) for about three years now. My father's ancestors have their origins mainly in either various suburbs of Manchester or various districts of Liverpool. During my research I have discovered conflicting religious information r.e. baptisms/marriages. Often some generations of Wilsons are baptised in protestant churches but married in Roman Catholic ones. Also, the siblings of one generation follow contradictory religious 'paths' in marriage to that  of their parents etc. All this makes trying to uncover my Wilson line much trickier than it might otherwise be. Has anyone  else encountered such problems? I would be interested to hear peoples opinions.

Thanks

Dear Doddie,

One factor which might help to explain this is the fact that in the 19th century and well into the 20th any Catholic marrying a non-Catholic would have believed that only a marriage consecrated in a Catholic Church was valid. Consequently you quite often had Anglicans marrying their Catholic spouses in a Catholic church [sometimes with an additional service in the Anglican church]. When the couple had children then all Catholics were supposed to ensure that their children were baptised and raised as Catholics. However there was quite often a compromise with sons baptised as one denomination and daughters as the other.

Hope that helps a little,

Hi,

I have a similar situation in my family also from the Manchester area.

My gt grandmother had both a CofE and a RC marriage.  Her father who I know was definitely RC was married after Banns in the Established Church but was buried as a Catholic.  His older brother and their parents were married according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Catholic Church.

I understand that many Catholic couples married as CofE in the 19th century as I think they believed the marriage would not be valid unless they were married in the Established Church because of Hardwickes 1754 Marriage Act.  They then proceeded to bring the children of the marriage up as Catholics as would be shown in baptism and burial records.

There is an interesting article on Roman Catholic marriages in Manchester in the 19th century on this link:-

http://www.manchester-family-history-research.co.uk/new_page_12.htm

It basically says that prior to 1908 getting married outside the Catholic Church did not go against the  teachings church.  You have to scroll down a bit because it is at the bottom of the page.

Fascinating subject.

I have seen Methodists married in Church of England/Anglican churches too.  I think this is mostly due to the lack of Methodist/Non-Conformist churches/meeting houses at that time.  Is this likely the reason?

Thanks jds1949, Luzu and James R. Yeowell for your prompt replies and helpful information. jds1949, I am particularly interested  that you mention that children of a mixed denominational marriage might be baptised under either faith. Interesting also, Luzzu, that some people married in churches contrary to their actual R.C. faith because of the Hardwickes marriage act. A lot of things to mull over. Hopefully I can make new inroads in my research. Much obliged .
