Hi All
I am trying to find Thomas Hindley Ledran in the 1871 census but with no luck. His surname has been spelt in various ways over the years including Ledren, Ledran, Le Drau, Ledrew etc so you may get the picture.
Anyway, I know in 1870 he was living in/on Witham, (it still adjoins Holderness Road today) with his new wife Mary Hannah but I can't find them in the 1871 census. Would it be possible for someone to tell me which district Witham was in at the time so I can then try and read through the entries on Witham?
Thanks
Ian

Hi all
Thanks for your efforts there Willow.
Unfortunately, I forgot to say that Thomas was born in 1848
The Thomas and John you have found are Thomas Hindley's uncles.
I figure if someone knows which district Witham was in I could trawl through them and see if they are there under a mistranscription.
And Tazzie, thanks as well, I was wondering what a "grater" was

Hi
On FreeBMD there are births for John W Ledran in 1866, Ann Ledran in 1868 and Mary J Ledran in 1871 all in Sculcoates which would match the children shown on the 1871 entry suggested by Tazzie.
Wife Mary Hannah could have been possibly misheard as Mary Anna ?

Although the youngest child is transcribed as M I the second initial on the original document is exactly the same as the J in J W above it.
The address is 15 Arthur’s Terrace, West Sculcoates if that helps.

Hi Tazzie/DS
Sorry it took so long to get back, orders are to take the christmas tree etc down
The family that Tazzie has suggested is definitely them
It looks to me like either Ledrew or Ledren but either way as DS says the children and ages all fit aswell. Strangely I have found out today that 2 children I knew may be related were in fact son and daughter! They were both Thomas' and his first wife' Ann children. Unfortunately Ann, the mother died in 1870 and John William died in 1875 :'(hence why JW is not listed in the 1881.
This has helped me a great deal so thank you very much indeed!
Cheers

Oh sorry
Forgot to mention Thomas was a Pressman (as in seed crusher) at the oil mill.
Thanks again
Ian
PS. Just for future reference, just how did you find them with such a wide mistranscription?
