Hi In my direct line family tree I have Charles Henry Smith who in 1901 shows as being born in Sydenham Kent 1865 he is 36 and a house decorator married to Sophia and with two children Albert 1897 (my grandfather) and Frank b 1900. I have my grandfathers birth cert. In 1881 I can only find one Charles Henry Smith b 1868 Sydenham then living in Deptford - but then he disappears until 1901! Is Sydenham in Kent or part of greater London - where do I look -I have tried IGI, BIVR,BMD to no avail - have tried looking for info on the father & mother's details from the 1881 census - brickwall. Am I missing something very obvious here? HELP !! Janet - Oz

Hello Janet
You are unfortunate to have ancestors names Smith. I have some too.
Sydenham was in Kent but I believe it is now part of Greater London. Deptford too was in Kent. They are not too far apart.
I think I have found Charles Henry's marriage to Sophia Ann King on FreeBMD. March quarter 1892 in Greenwich which was also in Kent.
His birth record may not give his middle name and he could have been born, or registered somewhere near Sydenham. You need a map and try entering Kent in the search field on FreeBMD.
It's difficult to find people on the 1891 census as they moved around a lot.
Hope this helps

Thanks Sylviaann - will try your suggestion with BMD although I have tried most combinations to find a birth reg. the marriage cert may provide some answers - I just have a sneaky feeling that his father is going to be another Charles Smith. In my next life I am going to be born to the Sybthyestryxxzzqq family as I think they may be easier to find! Cheers Janet
