I'd have thought in Scotland,

However, have you tried either of these links?

Good luck, as it would appear that many of those married would not have been married 'legally' and many registers have not survived.

The Toll House is situated on the north bank of the Tweed, therefore, as Steve says, it would be in Scotland. There is an image of it on a website called 'haltimescores.co.uk/images'.

'Coldstream (or to be more precise, the Toll Booth on the Scottish side of Coldstream Bridge over the River Tweed) was where many English went to marry. These marriages were in the main quickies and non-denominational in nature.'

As in clandestine marriages not held at a church.

Hi folks.

I live in Coldstream and know the marriage house well.

The link below has some info about the house on it.

http://www.coldstream-scotland.co.uk/history_bridge.htm

The town has only this year resurrected the civil marriage service but form a specially converted floor of the Town Hall.

The registrar of births, deaths and marriages still operates in the town and should have dates ranging right back.

He can be contacted at the Town Hall, High Street, Coldstream.

i'm in Coldstream too and the marriage house stands close to but on the Scottish side of the border.

It ceased to be used for marriages by 1855.
