Jane Hill born at Woodend Shropshire, appears in 1881 aged 18, as a domestic servant on a remote Northumbrian farm, Swarland Fence. She subsequently married a native and founded a family.
Can anyone locate Woodend for me please? I think it might be near either Smethcott or Pontesbury.

Only Woodend Memory map shows in Shropshire is near Ditton Priors
Is this the Swarland Farm you mention

there are at least 9 Wood Ends in Shropshire the nearest to Pontesbury is probably the one at Linley near More.

Thanks to all. I thought Woodend would probably be a common farm or cottage name. However it now looks as though Jane's geography may have been at fault, and the family had moved from Pontesbury to Woodend near Wednesfield, Staffordshire before she was born. They moved to the Northumbrian coalfield later.
