-george young b c 1857-1866
« on: Saturday 05 January 08 12:54 GMT (UK) »

I am trying to track down my great grandfathers birth in london said to have been born in sound of bow bells.  His marriage in 1886 in Sydney gives his age as 22 b c1864 and parents david young & jane cook.

the arrival of first child 1887 gives age as 21, in 1889 it's 23, and in 1896 it's 29.  then in 1922 his age is 65 on death cert.   so he was born anywhere between 1857 & 1866.

I can find only one instamce of a Jane Cook with son george no husband, widowed. that's 1871 can't find a marriage for david & jane either.

any help would be really appreciated with this brick wall.

thanks

Hi Jane
i wrote a rather lenghty reply earlier and it musn't have got sent.  Oh well i'll start again.
all I know is what my dad has told me which was relayed to him by his gran the wife of George who died when dad was one plus what i have from certs.
on the marriage cert for george & wife florence his parents are noted as david young (horse trainer) & Jane Cook his age is given as 22 in 1886 (b1864) on his dau birth cert following year he is 21 (b 1866) on his son's bc in 1889 he is 23 (b 1866) his last child was born 1896 and he is aged 29
(b 1867).  in 1922 when he died his age is given as 65 (b 1857).  maybe it should have been 55. in all instances his place of birth is london except on dc and it's liverpool. (that i'll put down to nan being very distraut.

I have only been able to find one Jane Young with a George in the 1871 census he is 8 years (b 1863) she is a widow living in chelsea and she was born in 1834 somersetshire there are two other children charles and jane. in subsequent census jane is by herself the age is pretty right and the fact that she is a charwoman in all three leads me to believe i've the right mother.

apparently granny young told dad that george ran away from home as his father abused him but there is no sign of his father in any census.  maybe jane had taken up with someone else and it was that one who was abusive.

i think geo may have become a seaman and worked his passage to aust.  apparently he was on a number of ships plying the coast and pacific islands probably as a cook.  apparently he was on a couple of traders that went down and on one occassion lost all his belongings.

sorry this is so long winded but that's about all i know. except that on the certs his name is george fitzgerald young.

so to answer your question I don't know.
