Thank you Kirsty,

It looks like that  this is the only death recorded for William Anderson, although his birth is out by 5 years with two census dates. I realise that the Census can be out, but I wasn't expecting it to be out twice.

I thought that William Anderson might have died elsewhere, that's why I posted the help! That baptism date is also the only one for Duffus,  with one sister Helen. Witnesses to his marriage to Janet McPherson records Alexander Anderson farm servant in Alves, and Margaret Anderson in Duffus, so the latter witness may have been his mother.

Thank you again Kirsty.

Hi Kirsty

That death certificate for William Anderson says that he was single. The cause of death might indicate why he was single!!! (syphilis) or I still have the wrong William Anderson.

Thank you to those who have offered assistance. I have now located a death for William Anderson (11/4/1862) in Forres, age 41, married to Janet McPherson. This certificate also names his parents as Alexander Anderson,a merchant seaman and Ann White. Using Scotslandpeople, I have found the latter two married 30 Dec 1818 Draine, Moray.

If William Anderson says that he was born 1820 Duffus, then old Duffus would be in the Parish of Drainie.

Now to look for William's baptism.

Maybe 1841 Census for Alexander Anderson and Ann White may give me some more details of this family.

Hi Keith

This link shows some potential info on Ann White and her ancestors. Includes a death death that you should be able to verify on SP: www.avfsmall.ca/ghtout/gp24.htm

Thank you very much Monica and sorry for the delay in replying. It got to 1 am and I needed a rest.

Yes, I am now 100% sure that I and with RootsChat helpers, now have the right parents and grandparents for the Alexander and John Anderson, who emigrated to Australia. In addition, I have been able to trace two other brothers William and James Hector Anderson going south to Edinburgh and Glasgow, and maybe their sister Margaret not marrying.

Regards and many thanks

To Rootschat.com helpers

Thank you for your assistance.

My work so far is:
William Anderson married Janet McPherson 27/11/1840 Elgin & Forres.
Son Alexander (b.1841) and John (b.1845) emigrated to Australia. William (b1843) married Catherine Scrogie (1870) and settled in Edinburgh.
Son James Hector Anderson(b.1853) m. Jessie Ross (1881) and settled in Lumsden Street, Glasgow (d. 1928).
Daughter Margaret (b1848) not married in 1871, would not be surprised if Wm and Catherine raise her son.
Jane Anderson (b.1850) - I have not looked at her yet.
It would be good if I found their descendents, as a relative is leaving for Sco next week.

The Alexander Anderson (87 years old in 1851 Census) and Ann White of Cummingston are William's parents. His grandparents are Alexander Anderson (b.1764) and Margaret Badenoch; and great grandparents are Alexander Andeson and Margaret Collie (m. 1751, Kinloss).

If William Anderson says that he was born 1820 Duffus, then old Duffus would be in the Parish of Drainie.
No it wouldn't. Old Duffus is in the Parish of Duffus.

When the LDS were indexing the parish registers, they missed out the whole of the baptism register from 1820 to 1854, and the same applied to the SP indexes.  SP have been made aware of the omission but I have just checked and it looks as if these baptisms are still missing from the SP indexes.

Thank you Forfarian for your reply.

I have a descendent of William Anderson b. c1820 leaving for Scotland on Sunday. Where should I advise her to look for his baptism?

The details that I have are:
Census 1851 137/00 004 /00 019 William Anderson says that he is 30 years and born in Duffus, Elginshire.

His death entry Statutory Deaths 137/00 0038 for District of Forres, County of Elgin 11 April 1862, confirms that he if the son of Alexander Anderson and Ann White, age 41 years.

Regards

There's no guarantee that the record of his baptism has survived, but I would recommend looking at the Duffus Parish Register baptisms 1820-1854. His descendant can look at this on microfilm in Rregister House, Edinburgh, in Moray Local Heritage Centre in Elgin and in the Aberdeen Family History Shop, and probably other places as well.
