Searching for Elizabeth Lee
« on: Saturday 05 January 08 23:06 GMT (UK) »

I'm hoping that someone can help me find Elizabeth Lee.

Elizabeth was born around 1859 in Scotland. She was living in Berwick Upon Tweed in 1881, but I'd like someone to let me know whether she was in Berwick in 1861 and 1871 as well. She should have been living with her parents during these times, but I don't know their names.

Any information would be gratefully received.

Carol.

A possible on the 1861

Tweedmouth, Northumberland
RG9/3887 Folio 91 Page 15

George Lee, 25, boat builder, b. Tweedmoth
Margaret, 22, b. Berwick
Mary, 4, b. Tweedmoth
Elizabeth, 2, b. Scotland
Robert 9 mths, b. Tweedmouth

If this is her, there's a possible birth on the IGI:

6 Oct 1858 Ayton, Berwick
Parents - Geroge Lee Margaret Cullen

Do you have any more details of her - children's names etc.

This could be her in 1861. All the information I have about Elizabeth is from her married life when she was Elizabeth Wild. Her eldest son was named George Lee Wild, so he could have been named after her father. Her second eldest daughter also had Lee as a middle name. I know that her eldest 3 children were born in Berwick and that George Lee had a North Eastern accent that stood out a mile in Sheffield where they moved to in the 1890s.

I can't find her in 1871 at all.

Thank you, Gadget. This information is wonderful. I know this is the right family because there is a tremendous amount of overlap between Elizabeth's children's names and her sibling's names.

Thank you again for your research.

Also, Carol, note that Agnes is Agnes Cullin (Margaret's maiden name). The birth for Elizabeth in Ayton, Berwickshire is obviously the correct one  Smiley

Hi Eric,
yes I am still using rootschat. I'm sorry it's taken so long to respond, but because I like to spend hours and hours in blocks researching the family tree, I limit myself to when I'm on holiday (I'm a teacher). I'd be really interested in any information you have regarding Elizabeth Lee. She was my Gt Gt Grandmother. She's the one that my Grandma was named after (Bessie), apparently that's what she was known as.

Regards,

Carol

Hi Carol
Elizabeth Lee was born 6 October 1858 in 3, Pill St., Gungreen. That's in Eyemouth, Scotland. Her parents were George Lee and Margaret Cullen. She married William Henry Wild on 26 July 1880 in Berwick on Tweed and I have 8 children by this marriage; Agnes Lee wild b.24 Dec.1884 (my grandmother)
                William Wild b.1890 Alnwick, Northumberland
George T. Wild b. 1882 Berwick on Tweed
Sarah Elizabeth Wild b. 1883 Berwick on Tweed
                Mary E. Wild b.1892 Sheffield
                Margaret Wild b. 1894 Sheffield
                Edith A. Wild b. 1897 Sheffield
                Lilley J. Wild b. 1900 Sheffield

William Henry was born abt. 1860 in Sheffield and died bef. 27 February 1915.
He had some interesting job's, Cat gut preparer, Tripe dresser and labourer.
His father was William Wild who died after 26 July 1880 when he was shown as a saw handle maker.  Elizabeth's occupation in 1880 is Domestic Servant

I don't know if you want the census details but I have them from 1861 to 1901 if you do. Just let me know.

My main problem is that I have been unable to find marriage details for George Lee and Margaret Cullen, despite visiting Berwick and spending a long time in the records office. As far as I can work out George's father was named George and his mother was Ann, but I'm Still working on that.
I hope you find the information useful
                                                               Eric

Hello Eric,

Thank you for this information. I've not had any luck finding George and Margaret's marriage certificate either. Via rootschat I found out about irregular marriages where people went over the border to Scotland to get marriage in the Eastern version of Gretna Green. The lady who I was in contact with had records up to 1855, I think they might have got married in the couple of years followng this. I've no idea how to do anything further with that though. I was up in Berwick in February - I didn't go to the record office, but I did go to the graveyard in Tweedmouth and found the gravestones of George Lee and his brother Robert (I have the transcripts which I can let you have if you'd like). By the church is a small road called 'Lees Lane' which was named after our family.

I have some more information about your grandmother's elder brother George (my Gt Grandfather). His full name was George Lee Wild, dob. 28th June 1881. He died on the 20th June 1960. He married Caroline Meadows.

I'm not convinced that his father was George Lee as I have found two George Lee's living in Tweedmouth at the same time, both as boat maker's apprentices, one George Lee's son, the other Robert Lee's son. I can't prove which one is ours.

Regards,

Carol
