I have just discovered information on my great great grandmother whos name is Mary Mores. (with the wonderful help from you angels) born in Hartford, Cheshire, abt 1800 married Peter Joyce or JOICE she had 4 children. I would like some direction on how i can find out more information on Mary. I do not know where she was christened or anything about her family or parents except that she was born in hartford. James Joyce/joice(seems he has 2 spellings) came from ireland and met mary and lived in hartford. How do i find out where in Ireland he was from??
greatly appreciate any help! thanks Liz

Liz, the following seems to match from the census data. Unfortunately they all only state that Peter was born in Ireland, no county or whether North or South. I have a similar problem with some of my ancestors. I can only suggest that you try and find a connection with other Joices as the spelling is quite unusual and see if there are any brothers or sisters of Peter and if any data gives their county. 1841 HO 107/97/4 Township of Hartford Peter Joice 40 Not born in county Ag Lab Mary Joice 37 Born in County Thomas Joice 18 " James " 7 " Mary " 8 " John " 5 "
1851 HO 107/2166 Township of Wharton 147 Gravel Lane Peter Joice Head Married age 58 Labourer b: Ireland (although this age does not seem to tally with the 1841 a lot of the ages in that census were rounded up and the age of the children does match with the 41) Mary Wife Married 56 b: Great Budworth Thomas son unmarried 21 Labourer b: Great Budworth James son unmarried 18 Labourer b: Great Budworth John son umarried 10 b: Great Budworth Walter son umarried 8 Scholar b: Great Budworth
1861 RG. 9/2606 Township of Wharton 62 Gravel Lane Peter Joice Head Married 62 Saltmaker b: Ireland Mary Joice Wife Married 58 Saltmakers wife b: Cheshire Hartford Walter Joice son unmarried 18 Saltmaker b: Cheshire Hartford
Although Peter and Marys ages seem to differ people often lied about their age to continue to work so although there are some slight discrepancies this still may be the family. I always advise that you check the data yourself. I hope this all helps. Regards Kathb

Hi Liz,
There are a number of baptisms at Davenham Parish Church for MO(O)RE(S) at the link on the previous posts for CPRDB: http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/
When you get the search results, look for Residence = HARF (Hartford). The difficulty is that Mary's name varies in the census records - have you tried looking for her death as the age may be more accurate on the death index (although not necessarily if the informant didn't know her age)? I think I would start by going through the baptisms and building family groups and then try to eliminate them from your searches.
I would try a post on the Ireland board for Peter, but without knowing where in Ireland he came from I think it will be very difficult.
Did you get round to ordering the certificates advised on the other threads? I think that it would be the best starting point to ensure you are looking at the right family.
Jean

Liz, Just a little more information for you to consider. Although the Cheshire Parish records project shows that two of the children were residing in Hartford this could be that the mother Mary was 'lying in' at a relatives in Hartford as this appears to be her home village. I note that these two children were baptised in Davenham which is within walking distance of Wharton. You will note from my previous reply that the last census I could find Mary and Peter on was the 1861. There is a death recorded on Cheshire BMD for a Peter Joyce (no age given) in Winsford (Wharton is in this district) for 1863. I suggest that you visit the site and you can then send for the death certificate of Peter. This will tell you if his wife Mary was still alive and who the informant of his death was and will help to build a picture of the family. The Cheshire Project site also lists the marriages of some of the children. Good Luck in your hunt. Regards Kathb
