Erskine - missing on OPRs
« on: Sunday 06 January 08 00:36 GMT (UK) »

I know there are lots of ERSKINEs in Stirlingshire, but I am trying to track this line in Dunipace.  Proving the antecedence has been difficult, but I have a variety of certificates for William (marriage and death certificates) where his parents are John Erskine and Elizabeth Hay.  The OPRs have Alexander (1850), Elizabeth (1846) and John (1833) born to John Erskine and Elizabeth Hay in Dunipace and the census returns have William on them, but his birth doesn't feature in the OPRs.  I thought perhaps that William could have been Elizabeth's child before she married, but they married in 1830 and William was born abt 1841.  As I like to have documentation to support my direct line I was wondering if any reader could help with regards to why his record isn't there on scotlands people.  Could it simply be that it was missed out when the transfer to computer records was made?  Are there copies of OPRs in a local library somewhere?

It is possible that the exact years you require are missing from those records which survived for digitisation although as you are aware, a search of Scotland's People fails to find "your" William and only supplies 2 William Erskine's born in Stirlingshire between 1833 and 1854.  The BVRI record for that area stops at 1833 with the birth of John Erskine.

Checking the census for William does indeed show him in Dunipace for a good period but the ages given put his birth back potentially to 1836 (1841 census)

I have family John Erskine marrying Jane Begg 20 Dec 1780 at Falkirk. They had a daughter Mary born Polmont abt 1804 Mary married John Snaddon 23 Aug 1825. Do you think there might be a connection.

Hi Helen,

The following may just be a co-incidence, but there is a gravestone in Denny Cemetery with this inscription:

Erected by Robert Mar Erskine and Agnes Carruthers
In loving memory of their youngest son WALTER JOHN CARRUTHERS who died at Wester Banknock, Denny, 7th November 1919 aged 20 years
The above AGNES CARRUTHERS died 31st January 1928 aged 70 years
Her husband ROBERT MAR ERSKINE died 4th November 1944 aged 90 years
JANET RIDDICK ERSKINE eldest daughter who died at Falkirk Royal Infirmary on 6th April 1968 aged 81 years
AGNES WILLIAMINA ERSKINE died 26th December 1980 aged 84 years
MARY JANE ERSKINE died 16th January 1984 aged 94 years
Also ROBERT ERSKINE died 16th May 1987 aged 93 years

Denny & Dunipace were at one time side by side but nowadays it's hard to figure out where one stops and the other starts. Denny Cemetery would be the nearest one for burials.

There is also a William Erskine, but going by his date of death on the gravestone, would have been born c1837

Anne.

I would be interested in the inscription on the grave of this William Erskine, as I have two possible dates (going by the suggested date of birth on some certificates - contradicting one another. )  Thanks.

Helen

As Falkryn indicated, going by William's 1841 census entry, his birth year looks to have been c. 1836:

John Erskine    25, labourer, b. Scotland
Elizabeth Erskine 25
Margaret Erskine 10
John Erskine    7
William Erskine 5
Margt McDougal    13, b. Scotland

Address: Herbert Mine Row, Dunipace

This is probably as accurate as you will find, in the absence of an OPR entry. People became more vague about birth years over time.

Regards.

Monica

ADDED: The family in 1851:

John Erskine    43, carter, b. Allen, Clackmannanshire
Elizabeth Erskine 44. wife, domestic, b. Denny
Margaret Erskine 19, b. Dunipace
John Erskine    17, b. Dunipace
William Erskine    14, b. Dunipace
Mary Erskine    8, b. Dunipace
Martin Erskine    6, b. Dunipace
Alexr Erskine    7 Mo, b. Dunipace
John Dryden    18, servant, b. Sinlethgow, Midlothian

Address:  Hy Land, Herbertshire, Dunipace

This is indeed my Erskines and I have some of the BMDs should they be useful to anyone else.  I don't know why he gave his age as 36 when he married in 1877 (see snippet below) as all the census returns suggest he was born earlier than 1841.  Many thanks for all the information provided.

Hello

I haven't been following the thread recently - but believe that those that have fallen in previous wars need to be remembered......

The first link gives Sgt Erskines  details on the Commonwealth War Graves site - (includes parents name and address - as above).  The second link is to his medal card.  You will find there is a discrepancy in rank.  But, it is the same person.  Info on first site is free.  £.3.50 to download medal card from the national archives.  Regards,   Steve   :O)
