My grandmother was Emilie Sewell born in Norwich in 1889, her great grandfather was Aaron Sewell born in 1792/4 in Bacton Norfolk and died in 1849 in Great Yarmouth. He married Lorina Larter of Witton, Norfolk. I have often wondered if Anna was his niece as her father was born in 1793 and married his wife Mary in Lamas, Norfolk. All these places (and dates) are not very far from each other. I have never been able to find out the parents of Aaron and I wonder if anyone in this area has any further knowledge of the Sewell family. Robin

Hi
I have not got the time to look through all Sewell references on this site, but you perhaps could check them out?
You never know if your ancestor could be mentioned in a will! http://www.norfolksources.norfolk.gov.uk/default.aspx Best of luck.

Thank you - I found three references to a Sewell on this site, none of them related to Aaron or Anna Sewell but one was worth looking at as an old time advertisement, it was quite clever. Thanks - Robin

Hi
I was talking about the "Probate" section. There are lots of references to Sewell, too many to go through for me, but could well be worth you going through with a fine tooth comb!

Teddy - many thanks for your reply - sadly I could not find how to get into "probate" - I typed it up in what seemed the appropriate box and it came up with "no match" - I went on to another page and it told me to join but only if I live in the area and New Zealand is not in that area - I think I am simply not computer-literate enough to negotiate that site even though it looked like a great site Thanks anyway, Robin

Don't give up!
1. Click on the link. 2. Click on the circle next to "Probate 1800-1857" 3. Type "Sewell" in the box below the list 4. Click on "Go". This takes you to a new page. 5. Click on the purple words "Norfolk Records Office Probate 1800-1857" You are now taken to another new page. The first two don't have any Sewells on them, but if you click on the purple "[Next]" at the top of the page, you can move to the following pages. Do this and on items 30 to 40 of 523, you will see entries for Daniel Sewell. 6. Click on the purple "[38]" 7. Click on the image.
Phew! You can read the Will of Daniel.
You need to go back and click on "[39]" to read the next page.
Good luck!

Wow - thanks to everyone who replied - meles - I will go through all those steps and look at all the Sewell Wills. The Anna Sewell of 1820 - 1878 is the Anna Sewell who wrote Black Beauty and I have been wondering if my Aaron Sewell is related to her as it is very much the same area and the same name. Anna died in Norwich just a few miles away from where my grandmother Emilie Sewell was born in 1889. Aaron Sewell is qite an unusual name and I have tried to find his parents without any luck, I guess to go back to 1792/4 is quite a long way back but if I had his parent's names it could link him to Anna Sewell, he could be her uncle or second cousin. I have heard that his mother could have been Louisa Sewell. I think someone found that on some early census record. I will go through all the other suggestions tomorrow and many thanks to you all. Robin
