William Mason - parents?
« on: Saturday 05 January 08 14:49 UTC (UK) »

I am looking to find the parents of William Mason born about 1836 in Sunderland, Durham.

I have a copy of his marriage cert in 1863 ( to Sarah Clark Wilson)and his father is named as Robert Mason, I have been unable to find the either William or Robert on any census before 1861.

I have found William lodging at the home of his wife to be on the 1861 census RG9 3777 46 1 aged 25 ( Mason misspelt as Moson). He must have been on the 1841 and the 1851, but I cannot find him - can anyone help?

Many thanks.

Hi elsie52

Is William MASON consistent in later Census' with his birthplace of Sunderland?

Elsie,

what was Robert's occupation as given on the 1863 marriage certificate?

Hi elsie52

As William MASON was a Seaman in the Merchant Service in 1861 he may well be at sea in 1851, as he was in 1871.

There are several possibilities in the 1841 Census at www.durhamrecordsonline.com - a pay per view site.

Hi Helen and JenB

Thank you for your help.

Right, in answer to the first question - I can only find him on the 1861, so I don't know if the birthplace remains the same on the others. Do you know the number for the 1871 census Helen - I didn't spot him Embarrassed

On the marriage cert Robert is a Master Mariner.

I shall have a look at the other site you have mentioned Helen.

What happened if they were at sea then, did they only put them on a census if they were docked somewhere?

Thanks again,
Linda

This thread gives more information about census returns for those on board ship.

Thanks for that thread JenB. I don't think it's at all straight forward is it?

It looks as if any hope of tracing them is going to be impossible. Ah well... back to the drawing board! Smiley

Cheers

Hi Linda

Sorry, I meant that William was absent from his family, not that I'd found him!  Anyway, here's his family in case you don't have them.
