Brown Family
« on: Wednesday 06 February 08 15:35 GMT (UK) »

I am trying to trace the parents and family of Mark Brown born in 1886 in Nottingham and died in 1965 in Nottingham. He was a plasterer. . His fathers name is John Brown but this is all I have to go on from his marriage certificate. Father John was a twisthand and I think lived at 20 Alderney Street in Lenton.
Mark Brown married Harriett Porter on April 6th 1907 and her father Samuel was a miner (I have that line sorted I think).
One of the witnesses was Tannie Brown who was an elder sister of Mrk. He also had another sister known as Doll and a brother (much younger) known as Stanley.

Hi Diesel,

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

I see a Mark Brown birth registered in 1885 in Nottingham - who seems unfinadable on census, and this may be why:
Death Mark Brown Age 0 Sep 1886 Nottingham 7b 125

Maybe your Mark is more likely to be the boy registered in Sep 1885 Basford:
Mark Brown Sep 1885 Basford 7b 194

What do you think?

1901
RG13/3165 109 43
Nottingham
95 Salisbury Street

John Brown, head, 51, Lace Maker, b. Ilkeston Derbyshire
Phyllis, wife, 41, b. Awsworth? Notts
John R F, son, 18, Cycle Maker, b. Ilkeston Derbyshire
Fannie R, dau, 16, Cigarette Maker, b. do. (could this be Tannie?)
Mark, son, 15, Plaster, b. do.
Fred C, son, 13, b. do.
Grace A, dau, 11, b. do.
Phyllis, dau, 10, b. do.
Dorothy, dau, 5, b. Radford Notts (=Doll?)
Gladys M, dau, 1, b. do.

I see John was still with mum and unmarried in 1881
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1881&indiv=try&h=2615847
RG11/3327 29 51
so we're looking for a marriage after 1881.

Have searched previous census for a Phyllis born ca. 1860 Awsworth and the only one showing is Phillis Richards - incidentally her father was called Mark!
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1881&indiv=try&h=17599630
RG11/3335 118 17

Let's see what the birth cert says!  Smiley

Possible marriage (but I'm not sure why it would be registered in Nottingham instead of Basford)
Dec 1881 Nottingham 7b 550
John Brown to Emma Fletcher or Phillis Richards

This looks good too!
Birth Fannie Richards Brown
Jun 1884 Basford 7b 160

Hi Tati
You are a star. You are having more success than I was. I will put that info into my tree for now as I can always change it later if the cert shows something different.
I had found Fannie Richards Brown befoe but it was as TANNIE. I thought this was what I was after but could get nowhere with it then.
Cheers for now. I will keep hunting.

Thanks for this as I have now got the certificate and I am fairly certain that this is the correct one. I will continue looking at the siblings to see where it goes and if this rings any further bells with my husband.
